School starts tomorrow, and so does my 4th period workouts. Problem is it's too crowded with people that don't work out forreal, they just take up space and benches and dumbells and act like they're working out. I guess I can do my auxilleries at school and do my core lifts after school at the community center. Problem is, I'm always pretty tired after school.

Give them a wake up call, or tel the instructure. Tell'm to lift or move. Go to the girls gym and gossip or somthing. My weightlinfts class was hard core.
You had to ask to get water, If you stood around for more than a min, you got 25 up downs. You droped a play on the floore 25 up downs. We where there to work out, not talk or socailize.

Wow...that's the way it should be, Andrew. My weightlifting class in high school consisted of 20 people standing around talking while 5 people actually lifted and the instructor either drank vodka in his office or went outside and hit golf balls. I agree....tell them you want to work in some sets and usually the loafers go away.

Well today was the first day, and my workout was awful. I couldn't go to sleep last night till 2 for some reason. I didn't work out at school, but I played some pickup games, and my coach said I can do my own workout after as long as I'm doin somethin. Today power cleans was the core lift, and my joints ached, and I just plain felt tired. My form was been majorly suffering and it was really getting to me. I had to move down weight, and still my feet kept on spreading outwards. Does everyone here do a complete front squat after the clean??

Try to incorporate the front squat into a continuous movement as part of the catch during the clean. In other words use the front squat to gradually absorb the impact of the catch so that the deceleration (- acceleration really) takes place over a large range of motion. Not sure if I'm expressing myself very well - hopefully it makes sense.

I think I know what you're sayin. I just don't think I'm quite there yet in the flexibility. Know what I mean?

I know what you mean. Executing a clean with a highly efficient form similar to that of elite weightlifters requires a very peculiar sport specific flexibility. For example, alot of competitive weightlifters avoid doing calf raises like the plague because they are concerned about tightened calf muscles limiting their range of ankle dorsiflexion. Cleaning efficiently also requires considerable rangle of motion for elbow flexion & wrist extension (which I don't have). Bulging biceps can a detriment to a competitive weightlifter.

Urs, I have been doing calf raises for years due mostly to being misinformed (people used to tell me calves were the main jumping muscle). When I was younger I did them on stairs like crazy, and now I do them heavily (my max is like 350 lbs). Do you think me having done this so much has affected my ankle dorsiflexion range? Can it be fixed with stretching?

sure will gator! Thats an ass kicking waiting to happen!

yes I have pretty much abandoned the clean, cause of my biceps, I use to have a great clean, over 275lbs at about 230lbs......now at 260 I struggle with 225, cause my biceps have gotten 3 in bigger lol. PUts to much strain on the wrists.

Its hard to say if the calf raises have limited your dorsiflexion, however stretching (at end of workout) is always beneficial/important. While calves may not be the main jumping muscle, strong calves (and achilles tendons) are important to a basketball player. The force generated by the jumping muscles in the thighs still needs to be transferred to the floor throught the calf muscles/achilles tendons. Weak calves will reduce the efficiency of this transfer of force.

Strong calves (as well as dorsiflexors, inverters & especally everters such as the peroneii) will also lessen the risk of ankle injuries.

arondaballer - does your gym open early? You could just workout before classes and relax a bit (like everyone else) during your 4th period. Just a thought..

My coach is letting me do my own workout after school. Our basketball weight room doesn't even have a squat rack! So I go to the community center where I work out after school, and I have been getting some good workouts. I just shoot and do sprints in 4th period now. But thanks for the suggestion fsdsk.
