alcohol and gaining mass

Hello!

How does alcohol have effects on gainig mass, lets say, u go party every weekend and drink a bit to much? Should i cut it off totaly to gain?tnx

What do you think the answer to this questions is? Or are you looking for us to say that it is totally fine to continue consuming large amounts of alcohol?

I try to drink 1/1.5 beers a day for every pound I weigh. Mass never came so easily.

Alcohol in moderation actually has some very good benefits. Now when I say in moderation, this means 2-3 drinks per day for a male weighing at least 150 lbs. Also, this does NOT mean that you can not drink all week and then have 14 drinks on Saturday night...

This effect is known as the J-curve, and it shows that people who have alcohol every night are healthier than those who do not drink at all! Of course, the risk of problems goes up with higher consumption.

Potential benefits include thinner blood, decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks, decrease in the risk of ulcers, decrease in the risk of Type 2 diabetes and lower blood pressure.

I also think I remember Arnold talking about how his favorite post-workout drink was a cold beer.

Not to mention dragging your butt at the gym, 2-3 drinks a day is moderate??? Thats news to me!

first off moderate means 1-2 for men and 1 for women...3 is really pushing it....also it has good effects on the general population...however for athletes it carries more negative effects like preventing muscle repair...athletes are generally healthier to begin with than general population so these 'benefits' are not really benefits at all....maybe once ina while it's fine to have a beer with a friend...but not to go out and drink like a (fish?) on weekends...

Fight on state where are you getting your info? 2-3 beers per day is moderation? Are you referring to wine when you talk about the benefits?

No, I'm talking about alcohol. Alcohol is the exact same regardless of what you're drinking. My info comes from Dr. James Pawelzcyk, exercise physiologist. There are a lot of things to consider when looking at what is considered "moderate", specifically body weight. Studies do show that there's a correlation between alcohol consumption and body weight. And considering that over half of our population is overweight and 1/3 is obese, you can see where the high number of 3 comes from.

Trust me, I was as shocked as you guys to see 3 as moderate. Up until recently I only heard 1-2.

Beer one of two a day never hurts,it loaded with calories but then you go to the whiskey and harder goods,and then all you do is stay home and get trashed,get your priorties straight work out or drink.

Sorry to pull this back up from a long while back, but I just registered here after lurking for a long time.

He's right -- alcohol is essentially the same regardless of what form it's in. Any studies that make it seem that wine is better for you are misleading; it's most likely the opposite, that people who are in better shape may tend to drink wine. (Not always true, beer drinkers, don't get upset with me. I far prefer a good stout or IPA to a glass of wine)

I am only slightly familiar with the effects of alcohol on muscle gain and such. But I do think that a very large chunk of the weight gain associated with drinking is probably not because of the drinking, but because you just ate an entire large pizza with your beer. Alcohol, of course, does contain 'empty calories' and if you simply add a few drinks on top of your unaltered diet you will likely gain a little weight over time, but the same is true of anything containing calories you aren't using.

My experiences? Drinking moderately and not eating a bunch of garbage doesn't cause weight gain, really. This is different if you go out and drink 17 beers in one night...

And about 2-3 being too much... 2-3 is considered moderate in almost all of the world, except for the U.S. We tend to think anything more than one drink a day is too much, for some reason. And someone who never drinks is going to be affected more by 2-3 drinks than someone who drinks regularly.

I don't understand the reason for this post....why pull up an old post and merely state your opinion...

Red wine has been found to be generally more beneficial for the heart because of the flavanoids and other healthy compounds found in in...not all alcohol is created equal...

Alcohol of any kind slows down muscle repair...

Alcohol is 2nd highest in calories/gram only to fat...you have 7 calories per gram....2-3 regular beers can easily be 600-800 calories....

General population can benefit from 1-2 glasses of red wine and 1 glass for women...for athletes this is not important.......

Also nutrition wasn't what it is now back in the 1970s...there has been a lot of advances...

Recent studies have shown moderate amounts of beer are just as beneficial as moderate amounts of wine. Plus there's a lot of things that are fun that are also bad for you. If you're that worried about calories do shots or drink cocktails.

Yeah, but I've also heard that you can get some of the same benefits by drinking white grape juice, before it ferments.

Actually, It's red grape juice that has similar effects of red wine, at least when it comes to reservatrol.

In unrelated news, when I've had too much to drink, and my dog acts up, I end up bellowing at him "SELL-OWN", because I cannot properly pronounce "settle down". I can hear the stupidity of it when it leaves my throat, I just can't do anything about it. Then I am laughed at.

For the layman, kenny, you are correct; in general usage, the term alcohol usually refers to ethanol, (grain alcohol). However, in chemistry, alcohol is a more general term, applied to any organic compound in which a hydroxyl group is bound to a carbon atom, which in turn is bound to other hydrogen and/or carbon atoms. The general formula for a simple alcohol containing no rings is CnH2n+1OH. From there, a clarifying adjective or a suffix can be added to show distinction.

And, watch your mouth.....

a 1.5oz shot (80proof)=12oz beer=6oz glass of wine. i learned this is in my alcohol class when i got in trouble at school and i learned it at my driver improvement (unrelated). either way a little is ok but binging is bad. too bad i can't help myself.

I would try to make the beer only a weekend only deal, or just few days a weeks. I Know that I feel dramatically better on workout days if the day before was a no beer day.(1-3 beers)
