What’s the reason for this increase? Carbohydrates. The old thinking was that FAT made us fat. So, we all began eating fat free (but high carbohydrate) foods. The result? We got 30% fatter! High carbohydrate foods such as Potatoes, rice, pasta and bread cause your body to store more of what you eat as fat!.
Carbohydrates stimulate insulin production in your body. Insulin is essentially a FAT storage hormone and, if not properly manipulated through diet and exercise, will PREVENT fat loss, even on a low caloric intake, which is the main reason why high carbohydrate diet plans will NEVER promote fat reduction.

Look at the civilizations that eat the lowest amount of carbs on average (the US at about 50-60%). Look at the areas with the highest intake (up to 90%)... The US has the highest chronic disease and obesity rates.

Vege boy, I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say, but Carb Lo, you're wrong. And instead of re-hashing the entire argument for the millionth time, do a search and see why..

We dont just "supersize" when eating out but now Americans are having food portions at home that they have been getting when dining out.

rev8ball you are right. Carbs are not the problems but calories. I don't want to rehash the arguments either but the New York Times went through them again this week in the Science section on Tuesday in an article entitled "Pounds Lost on Atkins Diet May Quickly Return". You can look it up on their website.

I agree with the above posts. Carbs are not the enemy. All food as God made it is good. It is calories vs inactivity that has made America fat not potatoes and rice. The fact is a "normal" serving on todays plates could feed 3 people at at time. Not to mention the way the food is prepared. Frying everything in oil is not the way to go. Also we eat a lot of man made foods, pastries, ice cream, candy goodie galore. Now add the fact that most of us spend our days on our blessed assurances doing very little activity is disaster. I remember when I was a kid helping my mom with chores, Just washing clothes was something. You had to put those clothes through the wringer. We swept the carpets, We walked with groceries and toted them upstairs. It is a lot of little things called lifestyle that add to the our present state.
