I'm new to weight lifting, a true beginner. I'm not sure how to go about changing the weights during or between sets. For example, if I'm doing lateral arm raises at 30 lbs. (2 sets 12, 2 sets 10) and at about my 8th rep in the second set can't lift it all the way do I reduce the weight and pick up where I left off or do I rest and begin the next set at the same weight and do as many reps as I can?

My first thought is that as a beginner you are able to do lateral raises with 30lbs? That is amazing in itself....go lighter...learn the form then add weight

As a quarter squatter was dominating the rack, I heard a conversation between an old powerlifter (easily in his 60\\'s) and what I would guess was his grandson (15-yrs old):

Kid: \\"So, why does he stop so short on his squats? That looks weird to me.\\"

Old PL\\'er: \\"He\\'s afraid if he squats deep, his vagina might touch the ground.\\"

He might be adding the dumbbells together. I did that when I first started, I thought that was what you were supposed to do.

Complete each set as best you can, and adjust the weight in between sets based on how you felt during that set.

So what your saying is to use a weight I can complete all the sets and reps with? And I'm not adding weights together, I started using two 30lbs dumbbells to start but couldn't continue after the 8th rep in the second set.
