OK, so I am just starting a new program and I think I've made some serious mistakes in the past. I've never been able to put on the kind of muscle I would like and I'm starting to understand why-I have always trained with heavy cardio BEFORE my weight training and, after reading through other posts, this is apparently a BAD idea! My main goal with the cardio has been to try and trim my midsection just a bit (it doesn't need drastic change, just a little slimming)-Everywhere else I'm definitely wanting to get bigger. My question is, if I'm doing a 4X a week weight program, working each muscle group twice a week, is a 2X a week cardio program on non-lifting days adequate? This still gives me a day of complete rest which I also hear is important. Should it be even less while I'm trying to bulk up? Thanks ahead of time for any feedback!

If you're trying to bulk you will have to eat more food if you're doing cardio. Cardio does not help mass gaining, and some even avoid it while gaining.
You need to prioritize your goals. You can't gain mass and "trim" your midsection at the same time. Pick one and go all out, then do the other.

Thanks ecle5c. So, I'm understanding this to mean that I can cut cardio all together for right now? I wouldn't mind that as I'm a lot more anxious to weight train than I am to do cardio based on my current goals, I just want to make sure I'm doing the most effective training overall.

Do cardio for cardiovascular health.
If muscle is your priority, then more rest and heavier weights is your ticket.
Prioritize your goals, then do what gears you best to reach them.
