Most people here say to do cardio no more than 3/4 times a week. I understand that. But what I want to know is how is cardio defined? Is it just elevating your heartrate for a certain period of time? If so, isn't weight training a form of cardio? I mean, I know when I work out, my heart is pumping hard the wholetime. My rest times in between sets are pretty fast, so I keep my heartrate up. So, I have 2 questions. First, is weightlifting a form of cardio? And secondly, should I just be doing my cardio on days when I'm not lifting to help conserve calories for muscle mass(doing heavylifting then doing cardio has got to burn a ton of calories)?

Good question. Weight training at times can be almost as efficient as a good cardio session. It depends on how you train. The right weight training regimine can have dramatic fat burning effects by increasing the overall conditioning of the muscles. Schemes like supersetting which is almost what you are doing will increase the mitochondria cells in our muscles. These are basically fat burning furnaces. So, in answer to this question, yes.
For your second question, with doing the type of weight training you are doing, I would definitely do my cardio on off days. You may "feel" like you are burning more calories by doing cardio right after weights, and in essence you are, but much of it will be the muscle tissue you so desperately need to burn fat. Cortisol will be released in abundance, and this literally eats away at muscle. So, you are really taking one step forward, 2 steps backward if you get what I mean.
-------------- Great people never want it easier, they just want to be better!
