Hello My name is Angela. I'm 31 years old and I have 4 children this week I have desided to quit smoking Yeay for me. The probem that I have is I am somewhat over weight ok alot. I was sick this past winter and couldn'tget out of bed half the time do to my heavy meds. and I seem tohave put on a few pounds. I really want to get it off.
I don't have acsess to a gym. So i'm starting to go walking. Mt question to you is how long should I start walking and how many days a aweek should I do this. I was thinking about starting really slow at 3 days a week for about an hour at a time. Is this not enough should I be doing more?
thanks Angela
nanooke...One of the most important steps is to get your diet under control. There is a lot of information here to help determine what you should be eating...check out the nutritional plan at the top. Once you fill out your profile it'll tell you about how many calories you should be getting to Maintain...don't go over that and try to drop 100-200 calories at a time (and only eat good foods...many threads about what is good on here).
Walking is good and can be a great start to leading into a tougher routine. Find your max HR (heart rate)...think the formula is 220-age then 85% of that...for me it's 220-31=189 then 189*.85=160 is my max HR. If you can maintain between 65% and 85% of your max heart rate for 30-45 minutes then that would be the ultimate way to burn excess fat. If it's been a while since you've worked out and you find you can't quite maintain that then get as close to those HR #'s as you can for as long as you can. i.e. 20 minutes at 60%, and work up to where you can reach your max for the full time. Getting a fitness plan (also at the top) is great as well and they offer a plan on how to get fit at home.
It's tough starting out, but these forums are a great source of information as well as motiviation. Feel free to ask any questions you want and we'll try to help you out however we can. Good luck and keep us posted.
