My favorite thing on halloween is giving out beer and cigarettes to the kids...LOL..just kidding. I do love a good haunted house! There are some great ones in our area. Anyone have any special halloween traditions?-------------- Great people never want it easier, they just want to be better! Ron |

"All Hallows Eve" is my absolute FAVORITE holiday! And I know that probably didnt suprise most of you. Heck, my costume is usually done by August...LOL.
Every year, I go all out: graveyard out front for the trick or treaters (and usually end up scaring more parents than kids...LOL!). I also have a huge party, with tons more of decorations, fog machines, music, and food. Generally, I hold it the night before the actual holiday since, believe it or not, Oct 31st is a state holiday in Nevada (it was the date of our admission to the Union). Two years ago was one of the best. I told everyone that my party was vampire-themed; that they should dress up as any vampire. We had Buffy-types, Interview w/ a vampire ones, even Count Chochula and the Count from Seasame Street! So, after everyone arrived, I went and put my costume on - Blade! When I came down the stairs, wooden stakes and all, all of my guests said "that really sucks!" (pun intended). -------------- Michael Trample the weak; hurdle the dead! Chaos, Panic, Disorder.... I'm still LMAO at the first line in your post bb1.
Funny you should mention haunted houses. I actually used to work at the first two really big ones in my area, the County Morgue & Poco Loco, were talkin' about 15 to 18 years ago when there were no standards or rules. I can remember people leaving in ambulances...literally. Since then the county morgue has been closed & burnt, not sure about Poco Loco, It may still be around, it was a little more family orientated but the Morgue was the gold standard in its time, it was the one all other houses compared themselves to. When you came, you definitly left with a greater love for life, never seen anybody leave wanting there money back. Anyway, since then I have evolved, I now take my kids around the sub-division going from door to door. It sure is funny how we change, I'm Sure when my kids are a little bigger I'll take them to a haunted house, nowadays there a dime a dozen aroud here. As for as my favorite thing goes I have come full circle & enjoy the same thing I did when I was a kid, getting home & dumping out all that candy my three kids got & seeing what they have too much of and making it my cut of the loot.....well something has to be done with it! -------------- I have seen the enemy.....and it is me. Halloween is not that big in France yet. Oh we do have the decoration but not many people really care or dress out themselves. Three years ago we had a Halloween party in my gym and I've been putting tons of spiders, bats, witches, ghost etc on all the machines and walls.
That was quite funny but then again it was only the kids (and me!) who were dressed out.... -------------- - Nina :o) Les Victoires éternelles sont celles du coeur. |

I don’t really have much to offer in the lines of Halloween “traditions” per se; other than the usual suburban trick or treating with my now two year old, but perhaps I will attempt to contribute a Halloween story as that is my favourite Halloween “thing”…now this is my first attempt at story telling, so please be kind :)
In Nova Scotia (where I grew up) there were plenty of "documented" haunted houses located in obscure parts of the province. I loved the thrill of exploring these old remnants – hoping to convince my slightly cynical self that perhaps there really was such a thing as haunted houses, ghosts, spirits, and the like ...I was perfectly unconvinced until one day I had reason to think perhaps, I might be wrong…. I should mention – there was never much to do in my small home town metropolis of 1800 people, NS is chock full of small towns like mine surrounded by the Bay of Fundy on my side of the province and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Although scenically beautiful, there is not much for teenagers to do, so we had to make our own fun (or get into trouble – but that’s another story LOL) Anyway, one late summer day when a bunch of us friends were out driving around in my friend Lindsay’s Volkswagen Bug, there was this old dirt road we just happened to meander down (not all that rare – dirt roads are plentiful in NS). So we continued down this way for what seemed a long time but then it ended abruptly right at the bottom of a hill. Had to slam on the brakes! Weird. No apparent reason for the road ending there or what its purpose was at all (I thought later that it must have been a logging road at one time). Anyway, the woods surrounding the road were not heavy so we decided to take a walk around. After walking up to the top of the hill on the other side we saw how the vegetation opened up to reveal a clear view of the Bay (of Fundy) and man, it was incredibly, breathtakingly, beautiful. Envision a cool breeze, slightly salty smell, rolling waves, large rocky shore encompassing your entire field of vision and with the sun setting over the water – and totally remote and unpopulated Real nice... Further exploration led us to an old abandoned house located on the top of a crest overlooking the ocean with the back of the house snugly fitting into the light forest backdrop – what a superb location. Totally remote and incredibly stunning! Why was it abandoned? Who could desert such a rare treasure? The house itself was not what you would think if you were imagining a typical “Haunted” house. It had once had large full-length windows facing the ocean that had since been smashed and left in pieces on the grass at the front of the building. I remember the floor in this front room being made of large square tiles of dark grey granite and this is where I got my first “real” inkling of weirdness. The floor had inscribed in it one of those circles with a star inside it! My first thought was why would someone want to destroy such a beautiful floor with that ugly pentagram design? What nonsense! We also discovered a swimming pool off to the side of the house, which various plants and weeds were attempting to overtake. But what was truly weird here was the fact that instead of water, the pool had been filled with gorgeous furniture – sofas, lazy boys, coffee tables, lamps that sort of thing and all had been there for quite some time because of the various mosses and other green vines and stuff that had overgrown these things. Ok, so now it was getting to be dusk (of course – wouldn’t you just know it) and there was no way any of us wanted to leave this “find” before we could discover more to this. So we went upstairs. Nothing much to see as all the furniture was thrown in the pool, but didn’t the creepiest feeling just run through me from head to toe and as I looked at my friends I could see that they too were feeling similarly. It was one of those “walking over your grave” types of feelings and well; I guess it was understandable given the circumstances. So as we descended the stairs from the second floor, a large CRASH – sounding like a miniature explosion went off and totally freaked us – Lindsay’s foot went through the stairs (salt water deterioration?) as he descended and then Brenda falls over him to fly down the stairs frontward landing smack dab in the middle of the pentagram! A raccoon (who common sense reveals as the source of the crash) came out of wherever it had been hiding, sat upon its’ hind legs and hissed and spat right in Brenda’s poor shocked face before taking off to hide in another dark recess of the house. We just kind of stood (lay) there for some long seconds bewildered. Anyway, we were very lucky no one was hurt badly (a slight limp and pride being the exception). My third friend then came excitedly into the house to see us all a little flustered – (he had been exploring outside) and revealed to us that this must be the house he had read about in the newspaper years ago where a rich lady had lived alone and one day went all crazy thinking she was a witch – casting spells on people and the like – and she supposedly had what witches call a familiar, which was a raccoon she treated as family that lived with her in this once extravagant house. (He had yet to be told about our little adventure, otherwise my cynicism would have kicked in full force) One day she supposedly went totally out of her mind and destroyed her house – and it must have been this one! Now years later, after she had been dead for many years, we must have stumbled upon just that same house! The story thus ends here. We did try to return for another visit, spent many hours looking but could never find the road we went down that day. Let’s blame it on Kraft disease ...? OK, so that is my version of a slightly scary Halloween tale. Although I don’t know if I was able to get across the mood of that day – it was most definitely creepy to say the least and the closest I had been to a real haunting experience – and I sought them out! And by the way, I really don’t believe in haunted houses…nah…not me…nope…never! ;) |

Halloween is the best holiday around! I enjoy getting to dress up for the parties, handing out snacks to the kids... and well.. eating them too.
That’s the only thing I dislike about Halloween. How will I ever resist all those treats? I can already see them tempting me with their chocolaty delights and sugary treats. All those empty calories... Mmmmm... Calories. -------------- - Its never about how much you can lift, or how many reps you do. Its just about doing it, and doing it right. ~Brad~ |

Was thinking about handing out mini bite size protein bars?
Maybe someone would like to be partners and make these available for the market, we could be rich. -------------- "Get everthing you want--just make a little change now" |

I've hated Halloween for as long as I can remember. I blame it on my childhood...lol. I begrudgingly celebrated when my kids were little for their sakes and now that the youngest one is 14 I don't have to do much. The funniest 'treats' I've seen given were the little tubes of toothpaste that Cher gave out in the movie 'Mermaids'. I did that one year to my kids friends when they were teenagers.
The best Halloween I can remember was when I was in HS. I was the oldest of five and after the rest of them had gone out, my mom and I decided to dress up and go around the neighborhood. We decided to go as Siamese twins! My dad was a really big guy so we each took a pair of his bib overalls and put them on and then I (being the taller one) stuck one of my legs in with one of her legs. We put on one big shirt and then buckled the bibs across each other. (The bib from my overalls buckled to her straps and vice versa.) Then we put old fashioned stockings over our faces. We couldn't see a thing and had to practice walking. I'm not kidding we fell down so many times that night! We laughed so hard and so much that we had wet our pants long before we were able to get back home. No one in the neighborhood ever figured out who we were and the next day when my mom heard the stories at school (she was a teacher) she just laughed. -------------- ~Victoria~ ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |
