My husband and his mom were supposed to paint the baby's room today, and he went in this morning to move furniture away from the walls, only to find mold coming up from the baseboards. I had him check and he found the same thing in the living room and in the corner of our bedroom. I called and left a message for our landlord, but who knows when she'll actually call us back. Anyone know what we should do as far as cleaning/not cleaning, fans ect??

My adivce is to move. Even if you clean the surface mold off there is no gaurrentee that it is actually gone. Babies are apt to get sick from it as are adults.....i would move if you can-------------- Curl Jockeys, get outta the squat rack! Warning:Deadlifting going on! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

In the meantime you can spray bleach on it to kill what you can see. That won't make the problem go away inside the walls though. That will require some major work as Hurrican Ivan showed me in detail.

we used to get mold in the kids rooms when we were in Spain all the time...something about the concrete walls...I used Tilex to kill the mold...I had to stay on top of it and spray at least every other month. My daughter would have a stuffy nose pretty often but other than that we all survived...good luck though...glad to see you post cristal...I was just telling mutt I hoped things were ok with you and the baby...hadn't seen you post in awhile...
ok...goin back to sleep now:) -------------- \\"If you had one shot...or one oppurtunity to seize all you ever wanted...in one moment...would you capture it...or just let it slip\\" eminem |

Tyler was PISSED when he called me to tell me, and his first reaction was to move(don't blame him with all the other problems we've dealt with in this apartment)but we don't have any money at all to try and move. I talked to a manager I work with, and she said it sounds like it's a mold problem inside the walls/floors(we have a "soft spot" in the kitchen) and that our landlord is responsible to fix it all and put us up someplace until it's taken care of. Like I said though, I left her a message at 8:30, and no one has called back yet. In the mean time, Tyler has taken pictures, cleaned the areas with bleach, and has fans going in the living room and the baby room. Anything else we should do?

There isn't much else you can do other than what you did. It sounds like a leaky water line or possibly a roof leak if the floor is soft.

Would a dehumidifier be a good investment to help try and prevent more mold until we can move?

I would contact the health department as Mutt suggested Cristal, even though it can only surface as a common cold and sniffles, it can turn into a lot more when you've been exposed for long lengths of time. Some things can turn into Asthma, Dermatitis(spelling?), breathing issues and possibly pneumonia depending on the individual, their age and there current health.

Other than that, living in a mold free environment is literally impossible, there is mold in the air breath. But inhaling mold that has set in a place you spend a lot of time at such as schools, home, work, etc can eventually cause effects in your health.-------------- Bettia To be motivated, motivate others! |

Our landlord called back and told me to have Ty clean all the affected areas with bleach water, keep the heat clicked to a low level, and to watch for if it comes back. She said if it comes back she will contact the owner and go from there. She apologized for the problem, and actually seemed willing to do something about it should it come back. In the mean time I'm going to continue looking for apartments in our price range with move in specials of discounted deposits and whatnot. :surprised:

In the meantime you may want to contact your housing authority and find out what your steps would be to have your rent discounted...or what the landlord would have to pay in the event of a move...just get your ducks in a row.
Pauls almost here huh?????:) Can't wait to hear of his arrival:love: -------------- \\"If you had one shot...or one oppurtunity to seize all you ever wanted...in one moment...would you capture it...or just let it slip\\" eminem |

From what my manager friend told me, in Oregon if they have to do repair work that makes the apartment unliveable, the landlord is responsible to find/pay for another place to live until the problem is fixed.
Paul is almost here. Less than a month until my due date. I really should get my hospital bag packed huh?? |

Cristal - what your landlord said isn't acceptable. It's not a matter of whether it comes back or not since it's not gone. The bleach kills the mold on the surface but that mold came from inside the walls.

Put it this way. if you think it looks bad on the outside try quadrupling it or more so inside.
Basically it has to eat it's way through to get through and thats ALLOT! |

DO NOT take this! Get the health dept involved if they do not take care of this. Just using bleach and turning on the heat is not going to work....actually causing the heat to stay on grows mold as it likes mosit hot places....the baby SHOULD not be in there at all!-------------- Curl Jockeys, get outta the squat rack! Don't worry Mutt n Mike, baby won't be in there at all. We all know it will come back within days, and when it does Tyler and I won't be dealing with it. Tyler's dad will be. It'll get taken care of no worries. Ty's dad works for the state and was more pissed than Tyler was. I also saw the spots of mold, and it wasn't as bad as Ty made it out to be. Maybe a 1/2 inch wide spot along the baseboard, not the swamp thing crawling up the wall I had invisioned in my head.
I just want to say, I really appreciate you guys being concerned and giving such great advice. I'm not joking when I tell you that I talk to Tyler about you guys as if you were all friends within walking distance, not across the country. I wuv you all!! |

Mutt is very correct, its not worth the cost of getting your house damp proofed, and chances are it woul dbe too late.
worth getting someone out to look though. x -------------- with your hands round my neck at least i get to touch you |

i believe homo depot and stores like that sell self test mold kits, testing for like 50 different kinds of mold, which only a few are dangerous to people, but nonetheless the issue needs

We had Tyler's Uncle come out to take a look yesterday morning. He does inspections for the states HUD housing. Since we had cleaned up the areas he couldn't say much, but he feels pretty positive that there is probably water puddled under the unit. We are going to try and get a hold of our neighbors and see if they have noticed any mold at their baseboards.
