Arms not getting stronger

I'm doing push-ups, chest presses, overhead presses, lateral lifts and front lifts 3x a week (plus other stuff) and cardio 3x a week. I'm significantly fitter than I was and my legs are much stronger, but my arms (or do I mean upper body?) are not getting any stronger - I still cann't do a "real" push-up and the 5lb weights I'm using are still maxing me out.

What can I do to increase my strength in this area?

Thanks for your advice,
Pam

P m your before and after pix are great. Congratulations on a great job. To increase in strength with your weights, try lowering the reps and increasing weight on the last couple of sets.

On your pushups, try doing your max, wait 1 minute and do another set. You can also lay on the floor and do dumbell presses. The more angles you hit the muscles from the better. Real pushups will start with 1. Do 1 at the end of each workout....every time you work out. After you do the 1 do another set of the knee ones.

You've probably made moreporgress than you realize. Way to go.

Pam - I do it the other way around - start on your toes and do what you can, then go to knees. make sure your core is strong - that may be part of the problem, keeping tight form will help. Imagine pushing the floor away from you, instead of pushing your body away from the floor.

3x a week may be too much for your upper body to sufficiently recover. try alternating an upper body workout with a lower body workout, or sign up for one of the programs here - they are good, too.

Thanks everyone, I was on vacation this week and not checking the site - back to my routine now though. I'll keep you posted on the push-ups (it's getting "personal" now). I know I need to work on keeping the core strong, I tend to forget that. I like the idea of pushing the floor away from me away - I just tried one and I do believe it was easier :-)

Thanks again
