Yep exercise is good, it gets fluid and nutrition into the joints affected by arthritis.
There are some good books on arthritis and exercise, The Arthritis Solution is one.
I have found that with my clients who have arthritis, it is worse when they don't exercise, they stiffen up. We do back off on days that there is a lot of pain or aggravation, we just focus on a different bodypart - remember, it is caloric burn that brings out the definition. building the muscles for shape and strength is important, but even if you have to do upper body work and low-impact cardio for a whiled during a flare-up, you will see the benefits in your over all physique. Try water aerobics for a little - to - no -impact cardiovascular workout. or bicycling usually doesn't aggravate knees too much (recumbant bike may be less stresful).
On of the things I believe strongly, from my experience with joint pain and my clients' experiences, is that sugar aggravates inflammation - it is almost a sure bet that my client has eaten something sugary the day before they are complaining of more joint pain.
Good luck!
