Anyone here interested in the Atkins diet? Or trying it out? I'm thinking of starting out on it, but don't know too much. It seems to have worked well for my friends, and I'm always out to try new things. I just purchased the Atkins DVD from Walmart (link here if you're interested) to learn more about it. I'm pretty excited about the whole thing. I always say I'll start a diet, but never follow through with it.

Oh yeah, if you're looking to start out like me, the DVD purchase gives you a free pedometer. Lol.

from what i understand about the atkins diet you have to do it right if you do it at all. some people go overboard on the protien and end up with kidney problems. but like anni said this site does have a lot of nutritional info for changing your diet for life. and ya i believe the atkins diet works to lose wieght, but can you happily stay on a very low carb diet for the rest of your life? i couldnt. my friend was on it to lose a few lbs she gained 15 back when she couldnt take it anymore.

anyways i hope more people post here about atkins, because the only things you will hear from the dvd, videos, books from atkins are the things you want to hear. i doubt they'll tell you how dangerous it can be if done "wrong". but i could be mistaken.

The lifetime maintenance phase of Atkins is actually very similar to the eating that people do on this board. I've read the book which is about cutting out the bad carbs ie white flour and sugar while keeping the good carbs ie brown rice and wheat bread. The induction stage of Atkins is the problem. It helped me learn about portion control and about eating healthy foods, but it's not good for the body especially if done over the 2 week time period you are supposed to use. Other than that Atkins promotes lots of fresh veggies and lean meats. While you could eat fatty foods you find that it doesn't work for more than a day. FOr me Atkins was a way to stop my snacking although the book recomends eating several small meals per day.

Asallot- here is the bad part. After induction liquor is permitted as long as you know that the body will burn the alcohol first and thus slow down your weight loss. However, because the kidneys and liver are working harder due to the higher amounts of protein it takes longer for the alcohol to leave the body, which wasn't really mentioned in the book- although I guess Atkins didn't figure a lush would be doing his diet:laugh:. I had 2 drinks and got way too drunk and was with a guy friend who kept buying drinks which I thought were okay to drink. I got so wasted that I don't remember taking him to a mexican restaurant (where the diet was blown) although I was clued in when i found rice in my puke and a receipt in my purse...once I found my purse.

well it taught me two things

1) Atkins is not for me
2) don't go drinking with someone who thinks its a good idea to give you more than you need

from talking to people about atkins they seem to think all carbs are bad. instead of a sandwich using whole grain (non-white) bread they just have the meat and cheese. and then there are people who dont like veggie's and say "oh well i can have all the meat i want". my hubby's doc told him it wasnt healthy enough to go on and he could develop kidney or liver problems (i'm assuming because of the peeps who still dont add enough carbs during the steps). my aunt's cholesterol shot up very high on it and the doc took her off of it. she eventually ended up getting that gastro bypass thing. which in her case it was do something extreme or die like my other aunt did. she was on atkins for 2 years and still didnt get to a safe wieght.

i guess the real problem lies with what people want to interpret from any diet. such as atkins (all kinds of meat ok as long as you dont have that slice of bread) or slim fast a sensible dinner to someone who's been on a liquid diet all day could be a few slices of pizza and only one glass of soda. and so on.
