first off: welcome aboard! never hesitate to ask us anything.
there have been numerous studies recently (i'm looking for the citations as we speak) that suggest that type of diet for the average person is not very healthy for several reasons:
It is meant for short-term. staying on that high of a protein intake and that low of a carb intake with little or no exercise could have some ramifications on the kidneys and liver. they are part of the system that helps the body with ph balance as well as insulin/sugar balance. over extended time, this type of habit could induce some damage to them. also, this type of diet, if not done carefully, can easily increase the bad cholesterol level as well as dangerous triglycerides.
also, people who otherwise wouldnt try any diet because it may be too much work tend to use atkins type diets as an excuse to eat as much fat as they can possibly intake, again defeating the purpose.
basically, it comes to this: your body needs proteins, carbs and fats to function, period. the weight problems come not from any one of those, but from a high increase in overall caloric intake with an dramatic decrease in caloric usage.
