I've done it and lost 3 pounds 12 s 10lbs to 12 s 7lbs and only been to the gym once due to work commitments..
A little tired at times but I'm gently teasing myself with cauliflower and brocolli for that. Then I will add 2 items, bread and strawberries next week. My fatty foods have been fish based rather than burgers and meat- so I hope some of my health concerns with a fad diet are alleviated by this... If I lose 2 pounds again for week two I'll be happy and nearly back to an ordinary diet for me within 4 weeks. I feel more in control of my appetite as I do feel greedy at times (I am a glutton given the chance). I can see and measure that missing inch on my stomach already! I cheated- I ate 125g of Hersheys dark chocolate bar, an apple, muesli over the week. I will update next Monday too. If you was interested in real time case studys of the results of diets as it happens(like now/me)- what I think is happening may be interesting to you... I best say dabetics, insulin dependant people can die from diets like this- DON'T DO IT. I also think if all your meats are fatty it's worse and I felt stick some nice fish in too- mackerel and trout or salmon. I've done my best not to rely on too many egg yolks too due to cholesterol. I know this is controversial, but I have been stuck at the same weight for months. This style of diet is no worse than my mates who only ever seem to visit McD's and KFC!!! This is probably the stupidiest post I've ever done too. But it is real! |

Hey, Neiltilley - a week of ketogenic dieting will help break your plateau. You may have plateaud because you need an increase in one of your macronutrients due to muscle gain.
As long as you do it sensibly, it is an okay plan. -------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

Hey Asimmer,
I am curious about your post..... is ketogenic dieting essentially carb deprivation? And what would the macro nutrients be and how would you identify which are missing. Warren. |

Essentially yes its eating less than 20g of carbs for a week to 2 weeks(the book in the newspaper said you can do it for six months- I think that's risky if you choose all bacon and eggs)... It suggested an extra 5 carbs each week to get back to normality- but I'm gonna get it back to 180g+ within a month as I believe in fibre, fruit and veg!
I was expecting negative posts about my Atkins style trial. This diet seems to give me automatic portion control, I don't think about eating for hours(see I'm usually a pig). Asimmer, your reply was as always spot on(although I ddn't know about this)I'd be interested in the macro bit too? And the muscle gain would be true in my case.. The more we can learn from you the better- |

Macro nutrients are just break down of protein:carb:fat ratio. I currently aim for 4:4:2 myself. I guess you can exeperiment with your diet to see which suits you best by changing the ratio without changing the total daily calories. :)

If you have gained muscle, you need more protein. if you have been relatively low carb for a long time, boosting your carbs (whole grains, vegetables) can actually help.
I don't argue with Atkin's when people are doing it sensibly, eating helthier proteins, vegetables are actually allowed (there are a lot of misconceptions about the diet) and taking the nutrient supplements recommended. Atkin's phases carbs back in as vegetables, some fruits. neiltilley - the reason you haven't gotten a lot of negative response, I would guess, is because it has been discussed a lot previously. Look in fit buddy - there were a lot of 'discusiions' about Atkins. If you are eating the right amount of food for your metabolic needs, you should only be hungry when it is time to eat (every 2 1/2 - 3 hours). My system is pretty much like clockwork when i am consistent with my diet - every three hours i realize that i am getting really hungry, I eat a small meal and am good for another 3 hours. Believe me, neiltilley, i am a glutton by nature, also. i used to be able to eat more than a large piza and drink a 12 pack of beer myself. I have always been an all-or-nothing gal, I love food. But I am not hungry - except at meal times. I think you need to evaluate the amount of calories you are getting in and the amount you need and how you divide them up. -------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

Oh, and not to rain on your parade, but the first 10-14 lbs of weight lost on a very low carb diet are mostly water. carbs hold 4x their volume in water, so when you cut them out, the water drops out, too causing a dramatic initial weight loss.-------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |
