I saw an orthopedist about a possible rotator cuff problem. He gave me an anti-inflamatory and tramadol which is a pain pill. I went canoeing a couple of days later and that night, at the base of my ribs in the back I experienced very sharp pain on both sides. I discontinued the meds thinking they may be hurting my kidneys but the paperwork with the meds doesn't list kidney issues as a side effect.
After discontinuing the meds for 3 days the pain eased up a tiny bit . Today, while raking I hit a position that nearly doubled me over. I can lean forward and to the side and cause the pain. Does this make it more likely that this is a simple case of muscle strain? It only hurts when I hit a certain position.
I am seeing my doctor tomorrow but I'm curious if anybody has an opinion.
Thanks

Having "enjoyed" a possible kidney stone (never did "see" it), that sounds like kidneys to me.. Have you had a stone in the past?
When it hit me, it was in the middle of the night, and the pain was probably 4 times worse than a motorcycle accident that separated my shoulder. There were positions I could contort myself into to make it tolerable, but eventually nothing was good and I feebly drove myself to hospital to find out what it was.
Between today and tomorrow, drink a TON of water and white cranberry juice if you can and see if that eases it. Beware, if it's a stone, it could accelerate passing it, which is probably good, but like I said - it's the worst pain I've ever had, and I've done some pretty stupid things.

Never had a stone. Laying still there is no pain. I can walk the treadmill. I even ran the tiller for a few hours pain free today. Twisting motions seem to exascerbate it. Raking put me in a position that really hurt. Reaching around to scrub my back in the shower hurt. Standing or laying down I'm okay. \
Thanks Fyrblade.

I dunno, you have me all excited at the prospect of peeing out a stone. I can record the scream and post it on you tube.

Good news bad news... My kidneys are just peachy. My mid back however has a strained, pulled, injured or whatever muscle. I'm down for a week on limited activity. I can do whatever I want to that doesn't hurt. I plan on watching all four Pirates of the Caribbean and enjoying the vicoden for a couple of days. I will try on Saturday or Sunday to do a bit more tilling in the garden.
I really appreciate you offering information last night. I think I hate the night before doctor visits worst of all. Your mind just goes ape sh*t with all of the possibilities.

I know what you mean! And I'm glad its a muscle thing and not kidney - much easier to wait on a muscle to relax than something internal :)
