I'm trying to set up a work out for my dad. Having pretty bad lower back problems I'm having a lot of trouble finding exersises that will not throw his back out, and all this website does it take the back exersises themselves out of the program. Can anyone help me? He is in his forties and hasn't lifted weights since his twenties, if that helps in any way. Thanks.

You could get him a weight belt and have him start out with lighter weights, of course.

Hope this helps...

CAUTION.........
If you are planning on getting him of to new way of life incorporating exercise, then I'd advise that he stay away from weights. Initially anyway.

Please have him stretch frequently before attempting to lift. I mean do stretches as a dicipline for three to four weeks in advance of starting a weight training program. There are a number of simple stretches that if done slowly and with the correct form could well assist in mending his back. Once done then work out a program including back exercises.

My favourites happen to be hyper extensions. I initially did these on the ground, belly down, then arch the back by lifting head and shoulders off the ground, same time raising the legs, straight to complete the arc, slowly lower. I have taken this further and now use the facility at the gym which allows me to bend at my waist with my head toward the ground and then raise by contracting my lower back muscles. This is rewarding done with a weight grasped in your arms against your chest.

An exercise that I shied away from, as I also had a back issue, was the standing calf raises it stressed my lower back, so have supplemented with the seated calf raise.
