Hello all,

I am hoping that I have come to the right place. I am a very large man that is wanting to change his life. I have always been big... very big. By grade 6, I was 200 lbs. Now I stand 6'6" and am in need of help.

I injured my back very badly, 2 herniated disks, 1 in my shoulders and 1 in my lower back. The one in my shoulders is a type 1 injury the one in my hips is a type 2.

It hurts to do everything from sit to walk to playing with my 18 month old daughter. It has been 3 years since the injury and I have put on a lot more weight.

If I do not change, my heart will not take much more and my daughter will lose her dad...

Any ideas on a good low impact beginers routine?

start out walking, very gradual. You need to focus on your diet and bring your weight down to get some of the strain off your back.
Are you under the care of a competent chiropractor?
Do you have access to a pool? Walking and jogging in water is little to no impact and the water will take the weight off of your back. If you don't have a membership - check out your local YMCA, they help people afford their gym. If you can afford it, great. At this point I would say that you can't 'not' afford it. The cost of a membership is small compared to the other option.
What do you eat and when do you eat it? If you start amiking some small changes, it will all add up.
Make sure you okay starting an exercise plan with your doctor.
If you can afford it, it would be best to seek out a certified personal trainer who has experience with back injuries and rehabilitation, nothing here can compare to some hands-on instruction on technique and saftey.
The human body is amazing in how forgiving it is and how resilient it can be. You have a long journey ahead of you, but if you stay on the path you will make it. Don't despair. Every day is a new oppotunity to do better than the day before. Email me what yoiu eat and when and I will help you with that aspect.
PLease consider all I have said, for your daughter's sake, as well as your own.

Do you own a bike. Riding bike is low impact. You may need to get a gel seat to help your back feel good. Try riding 20-30 minutes of light to moderate intensity 3-4 times per week starting out. Get a child seat and take your daughter with you for motivation. Flexibility is a big must for you. Check out www.jumpstretch.com A set of stretch bands would do you wonders. They come with a nice flexibility routine. Do the ones that feel good. Strengthening your trunk is another must. It wouldn't be a bad idea to find a competent personal trainer (there are lots of incompetent ones so that is why I specify). Take care and good luck.
