I picked up some beans last night and I was wondering what you guys think. It is Baked Beans mixed with Chicken. The label reads like this:

Serving Size - 1 Cup
Calories - 360
Total Fat - 2 (Saturated Fat 0, Trans Fat 0)
Sodium - 1060mg
Total Carbohydrate's - 62g
Protein - 23g

I know the Calories are a bit high but I have trouble meeting my calorie intake without going over my fat limit.

The sodium is high. Why not make your own chicken and beans? It would save you money and sodium and you could increase the protein and decrease the carbs a little (if need be).

Canned beans are lower in sodium if you rinse them before using them, and beans cooked from dry are under your control (Evil Laugh...)

I like black beans, cooked just about anyway, put them in a pan and simmer them with some salsa, have over brown rice with a side of chicken breast..mmm.

Or make lean ground turkey chili with Red Beans or black beans and chili seasoning and onion and some tomatoes....mmmm. I am making myself hungry and I just ate!!!

ASimmer, you always include brown rice. I have heard from everybody that it's better for you than white, but in looking at the labels, we were unable to determine why. In fact, according to the labels and whatever we were looking at, the white appeared better for us.

Please edumicate me.

jonathan weaver - brown rice is unpolished and still has its husk, which is fiber and its germ, which contains nutrients. White rice is stripped and then enriched, I consdier it lower quality. I used to eat mostlt white, it cooks faster and it is a little cheaper (we bought it by the 50lb bag at the asian grocery).
Here is what I have found with white rice versus brown rice - white rice, I eat it and within 1/2 hour or os I am hungry again. Brown rice - same amount and same things eaten with it - holds me for the 2-3 hours needed between meals. Brown rice is also chewier and has more flavor of its own, so it needs less toppings.

Calorie wise it is nearly identical, i just think brown rice is more bang for your buck nutritionally.

Lance -

Here is my favorite chili recipe (i make mine off the top of my head):

Brown extra lean ground turkey or 97% lean ground beef in a pan, when it is nearly cooked through add
1 c chopped onion (or 1 large onion, chopped)

cook until onion is soft, add
a lot of chili powder (to taste, 1-3 tbsp, or more)(or one envelope, depending on if you buy the envelopes or the containers)(look for a lower sodium type), then add
1 can low sodium stewed tomatoes or diced tomatoes (the ones with jalapeno's are good)
add 1 can black beans or 1 can kidney beans, rinsed,
and, if you like garlic, press in 2-3 cloves garlic.

Sometimes I add corn (a carb splurge) or mushrooms, sometimes even chopped carrots.

The longer you cook it, the better it will taste - especially good reheated the next day.

If you are on a diet requiring specific amounts of carbs and protein, figure out the amounts of everything you are putting in (beans, tomatoes, etc) and the amount of protein youi need from the turkey and divide it up evenly when you are done cooking 9does that make sense? I know I need 4 oz turkey, 1/2c beans, tomatoes are pretty low cal/carb, I make a double or triple batch by including 8 or 12 oz turkey, 1 or 1 1/2 cups beans.. you get the idea, right?)

I hope this helps - i will look it up and bump it if I find the previous turkey chili recipes... Enjoy!
