Which would you rank as your best exercise for building the obliques?

Take a dumbell, at a comfortable almost light weight. Now say you are holding it in your Left hand. Dip to your left side, and slowly bring yourself up to a straight figure. Same thing with the right side. Theres a name for this but im not sure what it is. Its best to treat these like a normal ab workout. More Reps, less sets, and let them recover.

Side bends.
Define more reps less sets?
Why would you train your abs any different than any other muscle group.
My two most effective oblique exercises are variations of the saxon side bend (holding two dumbbells overhead or a plate behind the head and doing deep side bends) for lateral flexion and full contact twists for rotational development.

What do you mean by Full Contact Twists, Wrestler? Standing rotating I assume.....But with one of those long bars as resistance, or some other type of resistance?

Does your gym have a seated torso machine? These are pretty good. Another is if you just do weighted cable crunches, but do them side to side rather than normally in front.
I have found over the years that for every contest I have done, I did not have to concentrate on my obliques much at all. Think they are overrated as directly exercising them at best. As you get lean enough, with regular ab work, they will show just fine. Getting lean enough to see them is the key.

Heavy Squats/Deadlifts/Shrugs.....try doing rotations to each side with heavy weight on your shoulders as if you were to squat.....can do the same holding the weight as if about to deadlift....
russian twists work well...
Reverse Twists on Glute/Ham(go down straight and go up sideways)

Thanks people. If you have the time to reply to my breathing post in this section, that would be great too.
Cheers.

Full contact twists are a russian exercise that is a standing rotational movement. They are very common among europeans and combat athletes. I find them second to none for training throwing and punching power.
Here's an excellent description...

I like to alternate between grasping the end of the barbell, and the outside of a 45lb plate. The difference in position makes for very different stimuli.
Although I haven't done direct ab work in a long time, and don't intend on it until my posterior chain is up to speed.
