In bench press is it better to have your feet flat on the floor or on the bench? I have heard the latter is good because it prevents you from using your back when trying to lift.

Both ways will work. Just make sure your shoulders and back are planted on the bench at all times. Remember that the bench press also uses your tricep and forearms muscles. So, you have to train these muscles just as hard...

feet on the floor, if more for safety, than anything. when u have ur feet on the bench, u r not as able to keep yourself steady on the bench (since they r so narrow). as a result, by being unbalanced, ur body may waiver to the left or right, which is something that is NOT good when u have weight above ur chest. it also puts a great strain on ur lower back as it tries to keep the trunk of your body in line with the hips. by having ur feet on the ground, it allows u to "anchor" your body and drive the weight up.
hope that helps...............

i agree with rev8ball, i tried putting my feet on the bench and wasn't that a mistake i wound up hurting my lower back and couldnt lift for about two weeks god it hurt, so be carefull when doing this, or dont use as much weight. see ya!
