I've been trying to juggle family/work and working out......is there a best time of day to do them, other than when your body is too tired to move? :)

I work graveyards, family, and baby sit while my wife works. I always work out on my days off and try to find a baby sitter for an hour when i work out on the days i work. The only thing that is hard is i miss some sleep. (but i get to workout)

I do not know if their is a optimal time. I would say you need to do it around the same time if possible.
Just like anything else you do, if it is important you will make time. I am a contractor, so I work from early to late. I had to start getting up at 4:30am in order to get my workout in. It is tiring but it is also paying off.

Your body burns fat 300 x faster when working out right after getting up from a nights/days sleep and performing the exercise on an empty stomach. Be sure to drink a few classes of water and drink some protein before and after your workout.

Recently I started this early workout routine and I'm amazed. I lost 5lbs in one week and my strength has increased and I feel great all day long. I get up a 4:00 am everyday and ride the stationary bike 5 miles and workout w/ free weights for approx 1-1/2hrs before getting ready for to work.

I must say the above mentioned is the best time to workout. Give it a try; you will be amazed, just like I was.

I feel that early morning is the best as I have the most energy and thats when my kids are asleep as I use a home gym. The workout gives me a pump throughout the day. My bed time is at 9pm though.

I have read various articles on this matter, and it depends what you want from your workout. If you want to bulk, the best time is between 15:00 and 18:30 (provided you run a normal 9-5 job), whereas if you are cutting the best time is early morning, within 1 1/2 of waking (whatever time that is. Hope this helps.

There was some evidence that T levels were higher in the morning, and there still may be some evidence to this. It is a minor reason though.

I think logically it is best to work out early, simply due to the fact that we are all human. The longer we have to put it off during the day, the more reasons we can find why we can't work out today....too stressed at work, too tired from work, bad day, etc.

However, if we work out first, these reasons are not available to us, and we do something we know that is good.

How much sleep is needed to have energy to work out?

That is a good question, and one there is probably nothing but a 'generic' answer to give. I would say in my estimation is if you feel 'exhausted' all the time, just cannot bring yourself to workout due to just being tired, or another sign is if your lifts are steadily decreasing instead of increasing, then you need more rest/sleep.

Hello all,
I just started back to working out and saw the question "when is it a good time to train." I'm a police officer and my shift starts at 3:00pm and ends at 1:30 am. Unfortunately, getting up early is not an option. I have a 2 year old at home and ive tried taking him with me. Obviously that didn't turn out too well. I finally decided to have my babysitter come an hour earlier so I can at least get a work out in before shift, on the days i work. My work out starts at about 1:00 and last about an hour. On the days I'm off getting to the gym is sporatic because of family and life. Could these time differences in my workout cause problems formy training goals. I'm looking to gain muscle. I guess getting there is better than nothing.

I think you should work out...period. Timing it to perfection is just splitting hairs. I promise you 'll make good gains if you work out at 8am or 8pm. Pick a time you can stick to. If you're still doing it in 10 years, you'll be fine

I agree and think that it should be morning.
Because as someone said people usually make up excuses by the end of the day, and don't want or have the motivation to work out anymore. :surprised:
