I'm not really vain, I need good contact skills when playing Rugby League, and so strength in my biceps is essential.

I have good solid strength, and quality technique for the sport, but I don't have the stand out, and strike fear in your opponents biceps.

I don't do massive amounts on my triceps directly as my aim is strength to burst through a tackle or tackle someone down. So the triceps get worked in conjunction with chest and shoulders.

I tried pretty much every exercise going, and most gym users say time and effort is the only way to increase width on the arm. I've used all the exercises on the website, and loads from British books.

Are there any short-cuts or any specific training techniques that I can employ.

I still do they odd triceps only day about every ten days.

Just can't grow the arm, chest out towards the shoulder way.

Someone please have the knowledge.

Are you actually talking about the bicep or shoulder (deltoid?).

Definitely the bicep.

Face on view. Arms down by your side, my arms look almost ordinary, side on view they look fairly impressive.

Is there a shortcut to get the face-on-view width to the muscle.

Normally mixed in with back, so I don't superset my back work out. But the biceps get hit hard.

A biceps only day about every ten days. When I do back & biceps I try to mix and match as I have about 13 quality bicep moves, a variety of cables, free weights, barbells and ez-bar movements.

Normal individual exercise in three sets at a variety of weights, always pushing hard.

Example todays with the ez-bar curling topping at (4th weight)52.5kg (115lbs) 4 reps, (3rd)47.5kg 4 repsx3, (2nd) 45kg 5 reps x3 (1st)40kg 9 reps x3,

I also have worked alot at lower reps recently to get me the power to break out of my plateau.

I would suggest lots of hammer type curling movements. Along with reverse curls.

Yeah I do alot of Hammer Curls up to 34kg (75lbs) at 7reps and reverse curls barbell 35kg (77lbs) at 9reps. Plus sets before it to reach that level.

Guess the message is stick to it, keep pushing, and in time the effort will show.

Cheers guys:dumbbell:

Yeah, unfortunately there is no quick cure. I have the problem also of bicep is nice and round, nicely defined from the front, but thin. Arms from the side are very nice, and as mentioned the bicep shape is great. Just a thin look to it from the front. It is rather unique, as my biceps are a part most folks notice the size immediately upon seeing me, especially with a bent arm. I have been told countless times it looks like I have a baseball in my arm, but then we as bodybuilders view ourselves differently than ordinary folks.

Are biceps involved in tackling?
I guess you can pull people down, but aren't most tackles more of a press movement plus a squat variation?

I am confused also.......I wouldn't think bicep size and shape have much to do with tackling. It sounds like he is asking from a body building point of view instad of functionally.

its surface area..front has less than side? All you can do is increase diameter...

True guys. Technique is all that counts, but it can't hurt to try and push those gym goals a little higher.

Rugby league. Playing as centre I am tasked with taking down big guys, and breaking out of big tackles in attack.

Obviously driving with the legs is crucial, but the tricep as a largely pushing muscle is useless, and so the bicep is vital to holding on to someone running at you at full pelt.

The bicep allows you to hold on, while you use the legs and upper body strength to deflect the run (or hit up and break through).

If you want to hold on to people, you should be doing grip training not curls.

The muscles involved in grip are in your forearms and hands (but I can't name them =p).

...and as far as breaking out of a big tackle, I'd think that'd have more to do with your lats, pecs, and triceps.

Biceps are over-rated.

Do alot of grip and forearm training. And already have a wide, and also powerful back. Training my legs for driving in and thru tackles.

Just looking for a more effective bicep drill. But it seems to be that the bicep has to worked over for a while to get the front on width I would like.

Definitely more of a want, than a need.

Cheers for all the help and advice guys.
