I went through a stage where bread was all I could afford...so I ate around 4-6 slices a day. but I put on so much weight. Is bread bad for you and is eating rice cakes or wholegrain biscuts better for you?

Its just like the old saying;
There is no bad food - just bad eating habbits.
Actually, the more grainy and natural the better.
Dont ever eat the cheap white stuff.
Baggles are always a good choice.

Could someone explain the whole bread thing? I try to limit my intake of bread and crackers to whole wheat because of the complex carbs. I still limit how much of this I eat. But I find they are still loaded with carbs. I ask this because I eat sandwiches for lunch often. I also use bagels occasionally because they have more protein. Thanks for the input.

You are off to a good start with the whole wheat. I always look for whole grain products. But don't be fooled unless the very first ingredients listed on the package are whole grains or grains are listed its probably not whole grain. Good luck

I've had good luck with Ezekiel bread by Rainer Natural Bakery. I buy either the sesame (the tastiest), soy protein or the low sodium breads. They have 80 cal a slice, .5 to 1g of fat 5g+ of protein, 14 carbs, and 0 sugars. I have 2 slices a day...I make sure I eat them before noon. Not sure if the carb count is okay but, I figure it can't be that bad if the bread is sprouted whole grain. Hope this helps:)

Your local health food store will have some whole grain bread. I recently bought flax bread, it is very good with healthy flax. Be careful of supermarket "whole wheat" breads. Read the ingredients. If the first ingredient is "enriched" anything, don't bother. Did you know that by law if 40% of the grain is whole wheat, they are allowed to label the bread as whole wheat? I think that is pretty underhanded.

In general would you say then that any food product (particularly bread, pasta, etc.) that is 'enriched' would be inferior. Is this what is meant by the term 'refined'? Can a refined carb. be a complex carb ?Just trying to gain a better understanding. thanks

Yes, enriched simply means they strip all the natural goodness out of grain, for cooking or whatever, and then when done "add" stuff like riboflavin, you know the list. Synthetic crap and call it enriched. Very decieving.
