Hi, im new to fitness and all and need some help.

I'm 17, male, weigh 172lb, have a waist of 32", height of 5'11", which I believe means my body fat percentage is around 14%.

My scenario is: I wish to build a bit of muscle on my upper body paticularly my chest and abs, however I also wish to define them and therefore need to lower my body fat by almost half, ( believe its 8% for a well defined 6-pac). I have read that I will need to do one before the other, i.e. Build muscle to how i want it, then start cardio training to define myself. I read this is because you need to gain weight to build muscle which is obviously opposite to burning body fat, in basic terms.

So what should i do first, lower my body fat percent, or, gain muscle mass. At the moment I am doing excercise and weight training at a low level but loading creatine.

PLEASE HELP... BUT I DO NOT WISH TO INCREASE MUSCLE MASS VASTLY.

Thanks mattb22

First off, I'm not sure what you are basing your bodyfat on...

Secondly, at almost 6' and 170lbs, if you lose 6% or more on your bodyfat, there won't be much left of you.

Third, squat more.

My body fat was just based on a online calculator. I guess you think I should build more weight and lean muscle mass before lowering my body fat?

I read an article in the recent Men's Health interviewing James Marsden (Cyclops on X-men movie). He said he once got his BMI to I believe 8%. Got the washboard abs. Unfortunately came with a skeleton for a face. Said he'd never do it again. I'm resigned to feeling mine under the padding. Anyway, once you get your weight down that low, it's so hard to maintain. Good luck anyway!

Wrestler, I thought you were shorter than that!

Hi there, I'm also a newbie. My problem is the other way around. I 5'2" and weigh around 90kgs(200lbs I think). I've been training all my life, but have been really slacking the last 2-3 years, hence I got FAT. I want my bodyfat to go down, by lifting(mornings) 5 days a week, and doing cardio(evening) 3 times a week. With this regiment, do anyone think I'll be able to drop my bodyfat% to under 20% in 12 weeks. I think my BF is around 34%, need to check that out.

....and is this the right program to follow, I must say reading the figures, I seem really obese, but strangely enough I don't appear obese. Seems that all that early years of hard training has left a mark after all.....
