There are so many different theories out there, and they all contradict each other, so I'm asking advice from people who really KNOW.
A little history.....I'm a 24 year old female with three children. I spent my first 20 years UNDERweight....120-130 at 5'9". I looked like a skeleton. Then when I became pregnant the third time, I just gained and gained and couldn't lose it afterwards. Now I'm 170 pounds, and I want to get down to 150. For about 6 months I've been exercising and lifting weights, but only doing it consistently for about 2 months. I walk at least 1 mile a day, sometimes more, at around 3 miles per hour. I use ten pounds in each hand for my lifting, and I do it at least every other day. I do 200-300 crunches a day. I've also been dabbling with pilates lately. I want to build muscle AND lose weight at the same time. I've been eating well.....1600-1900 calories a day. But the scale has hardly moved at all. In the last six months I've lost about 7 pounds. I've lost only 2 inches off my waist. I AM seeing some muscle definition, which I love, and I know that more muscle means more fat burning. But why isn't it burning anything yet? Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm getting very discouraged because I seem to be *looking* better, but my measurements aren't changing much, and neither is my weight. What's happening??

1. you need to use more weight and do a variety of exercises.
2. there is no need to do 200-300 crunches.
3. look at the diet message board and you will see the grocery list for a body builder tacked to the top. eat the stuff on that list.
4. Fill out your profile so it is easier to help you.
5. if you have not already done so, sign up for one of the FT workouts.

1. I do a variety of exercises. I'm using 10 pounds because that's all i CAN do right now. I've just now moved up to 10.
2. 2 trainers have told me that if I want my 6 pack, I've got to do more crunches.
3. Thanks.
4. I have twice. i don't know why it's saying I haven't.
5. I did.

if 10 pounds is all you can lift, then it is all you can lift. It just surprises me that someone who has been lifting for two months can only lift 10 pounds (depending on the exercise).
Sorry to tell you, but 2 trainers told you the wrong thing. 200-300 crunches are NOT what you need to do for a multitude of reasons. 1. it can lead to overtraining and will eventually give you negative gains or lead to injury. 2. abs are made in the kitchen. having a six pack is more dependent on your body fat percentages and genetics. to get your six pack you need to worry just as much about your diet as you do to your training. 3. the abs are a muscle just like every other and need resistance training.
your profile is not updating because you are taking to long to fill it out, or you are not logged in when you are trying to fill it out. update it a little at a time, or type what you want it to say in Word and then copy it to your profile.

Best of luck. sorry I was so short earlier, but I was in a bit of a rush and it is difficult to help someone when you know next to nothing about them or their overall goals. Ohh, and it takes a while, you will not see results overnight, it could take weeks or months, don't get discouraged.

Only one mile a day? Sounds like you need to do more cadio. 3mph is a good speed for a beginner, but I would try and walk atleast 3 or 4 miles. It used to take me almost an hour to do this when I started. I used to weigh 170 at 5'6 (wore a women's size 12/14)and I went down to 150 in 3 months by walking 4 miles a day, 4 times a week and eating about 1500 calories a day. I know that many will tell you that this is too low, but I took a body gem test at Bally's, and that's the number they gave me. There's a lot of contradiction on this board so you have to find what works for you. Not everyone can eat 1800-2000 a day and still lose weight. I also did excercizes 2-3 times a week(one day rest in between). Nothing heavy, just 3 sets of ten crunches, lunges, girly push ups( my upper body strength sucked), etc.
