My mother has bursitis and works out 3 times a week, full body workout 2 sets of 15, mostly mchines. She wants a more effective workout to tone up a bit, but feels she is limited in what she can do. What kind of suggestions can she do for a more effective workout?

If she can do the machines, have her switch to 3 sest of 12 reps and raise the weight by a 1/2 plate.
You don't say where her bursitis is.

The bursitis is in her wrists, and she has been doing machines for awhile now, but I"m not sure free weights are the way to go either.

If she can do the m,achines, just make it a little more challenging. If you increase the weight very gradually she should be alright. my mother has Fibromyalgia, a reoccurring frozen shoulder, numerous wrist and ankle problems. I put her on a very gradul increase on resistance machines, she does it twice a week and has seen tremendous improvements. She also does water aerobics (no impact) and yoga, which she feels is very beneficial.
if your mother wants to lose weight and tione up she will have to look at her eating patterns and clean that up. 80-90% of how you look is related to diet. cardio exercise and weightlifting and flexibility are all very important for many reasons, but the main reason so many people work out and don't get results is diet. And consistency.
