how good are these? I always thought they were great since it let you easily add weight to some lower ab work.. but I remember once one of the people working in the gym telling someone that cable crunches were mostly done by beginners...

On the contrary, cable crunches could be the undisputed king of ab exercises. Along with leg raises offf a bench with weight or roman chair, you hit upper and lower abs. They really are a muscle like any other, they need to be worked hard with heavy weight to grow. I can tell you from experience, I learned the hard way. Good luck..

I do it on a huge gym ball..... I keep the cable in my hands and lie on my back on the big ball. I tell you that gives a genius stretch and my abs are sooooo nicely cut.
(Great exercise yes, but I don't recommend it to people with lower back probs)

Yes, the ball is wonderful for core ab strength. But as you say, back problems are a no no. And if you do them incorrectly with the ball, you can create back problems.
