I started taking calcium supplements at my doctor's advice. The pharmacist recommended 'tums' because they taste decent and are inexpensive. I take 2 twice a day. I've read that calcium can be helpful for people who have trouble sleeping, but since I've started taking a morning dose, I'm nodding off in class. I'd appreciate input from anyone who's familiar with this. Also, is 4 antacids total per day likely to affect my digestion because calcium carbonate is alkaline and reduces stomach acid?

Hmmmm we'll probably need one of our experts here.......
What I can say is that I take a calcium supp as well since I don't eat any diary products so I need it.
I take it in the morning and I have never ever noticed any fatique from it.
About the carbonate, I wouldn't worry too much about it since you eat more protein than usual and protein is acid......

If you haven't already, increase your water intake by a glass or two a day when you take a calcium supplement. This will flush out any potential mineral deposits that may build up in your kidneys (mineral deposits = kidney stones). I've also heard that calcium can help suppress appetite, but I haven't read any outstanding evidence of that claim. All in all, you shouldn't worry a bit about taking extra calcium. In fact, its good to get in the habit at your age to prevent osteoporosis later in life.

Here are some problems from calcium deficiencies
Muscle spasms and twitches
Muscle cramps
Nervousness
Slow wound healing
Insomnia
Elevated cholesterol levels
Brittle nails
Heart palpitations ( irregular rapid beating )
Aching joints
High blood pressure
Tooth decay
Rheumatoid arthritis
Irritability
A good recommended dose is 1000 milligrams of calcium carbonate or citrate ( the highest quality forms ) for every 100 pounds of body weight per day. If you're in the 2000 milligram range or higher split the dosage in two. It is probably best taken after a meal or other supplements due to the fact that some things will fight fiercely with calcium for absorbtion. For the best absorption use a calcium supplement that contains both vitamin d and magnesium. As for the nodding off part, I have never experienced this. This may be due to some other change in your diet???? As far as coral calcium, have you read about the lawsuit against this guy who started this(the infomercials) for outrageous claims that are not warranted?
