For one of my Univ. classes we were assigned to give an argumentative speech on any topic we want. Since I love exercising and truly believe in it's benefits (also seeing all the lazy out of shape people at school), I chose to do a speech on "why exercising is the best thing you can do for your health." Next to explaning how it is a great way to loose weight next to proper eating, I will also discuss the benefits of exercise in all areas of life, from overall physical well-being to mental and spiritual health as well. Problem is, I don't know how to start!!! I need a real ear-opening, audeince catching intro. This is where you all come in, anyone have any suggestions??

Bring in a radio, wear some workout gear, and do a 1-2 minute aerobics routine before you begin your speech. Have the class participate. I think it would be a great intro and it will get the class excited to hear your paper.-------------- Hecdarec in full effect. |

Asimmer did a post under "General Health & Fitness" called 'A Warning To All.' It has some alarming stats...

also.... I've seen this used before....
Bring something that would be the same as five pounds of fat, and something that would represent five pounds of lean body tissue. That may shock some people too... -------------- Tim "I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self." Hecdarec, that is soo funny, trying to imagine my class doing aerobics!!! It sounds like a good idea to do with an active class but you should see these people! S...l....o........w. LoL, but i'll think about it. Thanx!
Timday, I really like the five lbs of fat idea...I could take in a few blocks of lard and show them that THAT'S under their skin. :surprised: However, what would be a good representation of lean body tissue?? Thanks for the ideas so far, you guys are good! Anyone else got anything? |

That is the point Diana, you get these out of shape people up and moving to show them how good it feels to exercise. -------------- Hecdarec in full effect. |

I agree with Hec.... a year ago I was panting and out of breath going up one flight of stairs... now it's much easier... I think they would get the point... not sure what a good representation of five pounds of lean tissue would be... maybe a steak?

There are a couple of old posts on stripping as exercise. You know ,like pole dancing? That is sure fire. Do your homework, involve the class for sure and go for it. Where do we register for this class??-------------- The greatest mystery of life is who we truly are. Charlie | |

Here's something my kids found... God knows how or why, but it's a death clock on the internet.. sounds morbid, but asks a couple of questions and determines how long you have left to live based on a few things including your BMI...
http://www.deathclock.com/ Kinda odd, but it may give some people some perspective on health.. according to it I'm gonna live to be 96... t -------------- Tim "I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self." Try finding some pics of people of the same age. Show the extreme differences between a 60 year old who has kept in shape and exercised all their life and one who hasn't. Show the pics and then start by asking the audience if there is an age difference between the two (or three or four) different people. Let them answer and see what kind of age differences you get.
Somthing along that line. That way you have first-hand physical proof of your argument before you even start your speech. |

You could start out by saying you have found the magic cure-all for obesity, diabetes, old age, etc. Everyone is looking for the magic pill or potion that will make them younger, give them more energy, add years to their life, etc. Proper diet and exercise improve almost any aspect of your life, it ain;t a pill and it ain't magic, but it is the closest to a cure-all there is.
I do think the visual aide of a pound of fat, or 50 pound of fat is very effective. |

I’m not feeling creative enough today to come up with my own ideas but I can pass on some interesting ones I’ve seen elsewhere,
Several TV shows here in the UK have used the above mentioned analogy of a few pounds of fat, the most effective had (sealed) bags of a gooey yellow stuff of the right density (~0.7-0.9 Kg per litre) just holding the bag made most of the people cringe at the though of it. It also seemed more effective using measured out amounts, like a few lb of body fat. Also a recent government non-smoking campaign had fat oozing out of a cigarette to illustrate the clogging of arteries – obviously this can directly be transferred to fatty foods. How about loading a plastic tube full of the fat from a donut and oozing it out whilst explaining that in digestion all this fat is passes through your arteries. Point out that in the US obesity is overtaking smoking as the number one killer, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3496918.stm About 2/3 of Americans are obese (at least 30lb overweight) so you could give out this weight then compare there ability to do certain tasks compared to those without the weights. http://www.aafp.org/afp/20030315/1249.html Or the average American is about 20lb overweight, so give everyone the extra weight to carry around for the morning before your presentation. That value was calculated from the sites below comparing actual average BMI (from average height and weight values) to the value needed to but someone in the centre of the normal range. http://www.steroidworld.com/steroids/american-average-height-weight-woman.html http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/bmirefs.htm Hope it’s of use, ED! |

You all are great!! I love all of the advice! Now I only have one problem, trying to figure out WHICH one is best. Thanks so much, I truly appreciate everyone's ideas. I think I could incorporate more than one idea into the speech. One for the beginning, one or two for during, and one to finish it off. They are just all so good! What could I use to represent fat in plastic bags??Lol,that's so gross but will be effective. Maybe some polenta??Hmmm, not gooey enough but it could work.
Timday, that deathclock thing freaked me out!! But I still have 57 years to live!! Yayyy! Good to know... |

Make sure to tell them that being fat or being a smoker is no excuse either :D I was fat, and I still smoke. It might be stupid, but as a case in point, I'd be happy to do an endurance race with any non-smoker in that class :D
In other words, as a little nuggett of goodness in your assignment that might lead to real change, break down the barrier between the couch 'tater and the fit freak. Sell fitness :D -------------- --There are no versions of the truth.-- Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park II |

I did one about martial arts back in school, got A* for oral GCSE. I just talked about why I do it, what it does for me etc etc and a few demonstrations that got the class going wow. My intro was a simple sidekick.
Im not sure what you can do to demonstrate through exercise but I guess the above suggestion of trying to get the class doing some aerobics would be good, that is if you can persuade them to. Maybe a directed music video of you doing your exercise throught the day lasting no more than 2mins? Should get the people interested or definetly get their attention. SOmething like those videos they submit for the show "big brother". BTW isnt this ummm..a bit dangerous? I mean if I were to do a speech about great benefits of exercise to my class. Somehow even if not intentionally, critisising fat people or comparing fat/unfit people to fit people and showing them how much better it is to be fit, alot of people in the class might take offence. |

Unfortunately we have to do an argumentative speech, meaning we have to take a side on an issue we believe in, and most such topics are controversial and are prone to offend someone. However, taking your point into consideration(the last thing I want to do is upset anyone), I will make it a point that wether to exercise or not to is everyone's personal decision; however, many people are simply unaware of the risks of a sedentary lifelstyle, and so my bringing some awareness about sports and its health benefits may inform many people, atleast I hope. And if someone is to take offense, then I am very sorry, but the truth is the truth. But I will do my best to not criticize (that is not my point of the speech) but instead to provide some serious information which COULD help someone realize that you don't have to be a Nike man/woman to be active and enjoy it's benefits.

When I think in terms of weight loss, I think of sticks of butter. One pound of fat equals 4 sticks (1lb) of butter. One pound doesn't sound like a lot until you put it on the table in front of you. Five pounds equals 20 sticks of butter. I don't care who you are, this is going to look like exactly what it is, a lot of fat. Good luck on your assignment!

Haha, I haven't even written it yet!!! I am still putting it together mentally. I like to start things waaay before due time so I have until May 5th(the day of my speech) to write it and get it almost memorized. I guess you can't call me a procrastinator. But thanks for asking, I will let you know as soon as I'm over it as to how it went. :)

Wow, I usually wait until at least 2 days before the due date to get stuff like that done. It makes it more fun.:)
