when u read a label and it says it has say 80 calories, then it says 27 sugars and 20 carbs, 1 protein and 1.5 fat and so on. Is there calories in those sugars and carbs and proteins as well that are not added into the 80 calories already listed? And if so how do i tally the real number of calories.

carbs= 4 cal per gram
protein= 4 cal per gram
fat= 9 cal per gram

sugar is a carb.

For example Nitro-Tech Bars
Total calories=290
c=9g 9*4=36
f=6g 6*9=56
p=35g 35*4=140
total cal=232
Wait they do not match up. There is a 58 cal difference. From what I have learned these are probably hidden carbs. Which would give you 14.5g

Hope this answered your question.

melissa, this is similar to another post i did on this thread.
the "hidden carbs" that you mentioned maybe the result of the company using a sugar alcohol, like glycerine. it used to be that the FDA required that the calories of sugar alcohols need only be included in the total overall caloric count, and did not have to be listed under carbs. however, a new regulation by the FDA now requires that sugar alcohols be listed under carbs, but can be labeled as sugar alcohols and non-impact carbs. all food and supplement companies will have to comply with this by year's end. most already have, but i know that muscle tech is really dragging their feet.
hope that helps..........

Thanks rev8ball.

Ok, I am really tired right now so I hope I make sense.

In relation to consuming the sugar alcohols how would that affect the weight loss?

Yeah I am losing body fat. Wondering if the body fat reduction would go much faster replacing them with something different.

I was trying to keep things short and simple. Easy to carry to work. No one steals my protein bars. :)

Also is there any good websites that go into detail about sugar alcohol?
