Well I'd been on the pill for about four years, and decided that was long enough. I stopped taking my pill three months ago and have not had a period since (I never had any problems with my cycle before, and no, I'm not pregnant!). My doctor says that if nothing happens in the next few weeks then he'll give me pills to 'kick start' my periods. I don't like the sound of this. Does anyone know if there would be any harm in just waiting to see if my body eventually normalizes by itself? Will this happen eventually? I'd be really grateful for any advice - I don't want to take any more unnecessary hormones. :(

You should let the doctor do what he thinks is right. While I don't see any harm in letting the body do what it will naturally do, you were taking hormones for 4 years so your body might be doing cooky things. When I took the pill and stopped I had an immediate period (although stupid me stopped in the middle of the pack). I am now back on the pill and have been for a while. It makes sense to think that your body will normalize on its own, but maybe there are side effects of waiting. You wouldn't want 4 months of period buildup (or more even) to unleash in one day cause that could be harmful too. Tell the doctor your concerns because unless someone on this board is a nurse or a doctor, I wouldn't listen to them (this includes me )

It can take up to a year for periods to return to normal after stopping the pill - I stopped over a year ago and it took ages to get my cycle back to normal aND tHerE iS nOThinG wROnG wITh mE
You do not get period build up if you don't have a period. The reason you don't have a period is because no blood is produced, not because blood is produced but doesn't come out.
If you're keen to conceive soon, go with the pills, if you are happy leaving things a while, tell your doctor this - he may have assumed you wanted something doing quickly about it.

Thanks for your replies. I'll speak to my doctor and tell him I'd prefer to just wait. I think it's quite unnerving that the after effects of the pill can be so drawn out. So it can really take a year then - I'm going to be soo paranoid, taking pregnancy tests every few weeks!!

You could check your temperature first thing in the morning for a while to see when you ovulate which might give you a better idea. Your temp is low during pregnancy and then fairly constant & then dips just before ovulation & then goes up indicating you've ovulated. After ovulation is the least likely time to get pregnant but not immediately after!!!! Also you can check on the cervical mucous which looks like clear egg white when you're most fertile and like creamy when not so fertile. I'm monitoring but because I want a baby. My period coming off the pill took a while to settle - think it's quite normal. Are you wanting a baby or just fed up of chemicals in your body? Hope it works out for the best whichever you want.

Oops - sorry I typed it wrong - got preganancy on the brain!!!! Meant to type that temp is low during your period and then fairly constant. It's the opposite during pregnancy as temp stays high after ovulation & doesn't go down again. Normally temp goes lower during period.
Hope that makes sense.

No, I'm not trying to have a baby, I've seen pictures of it and it looks much too painful!! Came off the pill because I was tired of the side effects (and felt uncomfortable about the potential side effects).

I came off the pill about 7 mos ago after 5 mos my periods still weren't regulating and then surprise I'm pregnant. My doc also said the hormone pills to kick off the cycle but I opted not to (personal choice)I had been on birth control in one form or another for 11 years and just decided to give it a rest. another thing you could ask your doc about is pro-hormones i didn't ask my doc about it because i didn't find out about them untill later. I don't know if they actually work but they are supposed to use natural products to balance out your hormones. Before asking your doc I'd ask your local health food store so you can explain it better to your doc. but I wouldn't start anything with out my doc's ok and I advise that everyone else does to
