okay, I know that a lot ( and I mean a lot) of people are on to protein shakes and supplements / what not. What I am wondering, is where does a 20 year old girl looking to take off 20 lbs fit into this? I am not looking to gain weight (bulking up in muscle is not the plan). I simply wish to lose fat and tone up.
Some people have recommended a high protein/ low carb/ low fat diet. As of right now I am doing cardio five times a week but no weight training.
I would really love someone to educate me on this matter!

Kcals in must be lower than Kcals out - it's as simple as that. The higher protein helps u to conserve muscle tissue. And I would strongly suggest doing resistance training w/the the cardio: many studies have shown it to be more beneficial to fat loss than cardio alone.
Good luck.

Try 20 mins cardio ( 3-5 minutes moderate, go faster after first few minutes), 5 mins stretching, 20 mins resistance/weights, 10 mins cardio ( cool down ).

If you're looking to loose 20lbs (and fast), high protein might be the way to go. As for low carb... If you stay away from bread, pasta, ice cream, potatoes etc. you should be ok. You can and should still consume healthy servings of fruits and vegetables.
In order to loose the fat, you need to do cardio... plain and simple. I usually do 35 min 3-5 times per week.
Everyone above has mentioned doing some sort of resistance training as well. This is definately a must. If you do low weight, and lots of reps you'll tone everything up as you loose the fat.

There seems to be a lot of controversy on resistance training. I will just say that doing lower weight and high reps for 2 years didn't get me as far in weight loss and muscle tone as 3 months of heavy weight and lower reps.

Muscle tissue burns fat faster,it acelerates your metobolism, so doing weight training is a must, you should talk with the instructor at your gym so that he can give you routine tailored to your problem areas and your specific goals.
