Hello:
I did a search and could not come up with a similar question as I have so hopefully this is the correct page. Would anyone be able to give me a personal story or evidence of weight loss due to increased calorie consumption? According to my nutrition tracker I should be intaking 1665 calories a day and I wasn't. So for the past 2 weeks I have met 1665 calories a day and have not seen weight loss. I do not want to throw in the towel in case it usually takes longer to see weight loss but I sure would like motivation. |

The only way that increasing calories would work is if you're already way below to beginn with. What are your stats? What's your goal? Not all nutrition trackers out there are acurate. The best way to figure out your weightloss calories is by logging everything you eat. It takes some time and effort but it really works.:)-------------- "One Ring to rule them all; One Ring to find them; One Ring to bring them all, and in the Darkness bind them." -LOTR Trilogy |

Apparently I was way too low to begin with. When I posted my diet about a year ago I was maxing about 1100 and everyone told me to increase my calorie intake. I am 29 years old. I am 5'5" and weigh 125. My goal is to get back down to 118 and loose some cellulite that I accumulated when I wasn't eating enough and my body was getting rid of muscle rather than fat.

If you are way too low now, then you are most likely going through metabolic slowdown, decreased thyroid output, etc. This will make it almost impossible to lose fat. -------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

I am in your same situation lucy. I have been eating around 1000-1200 kcals a day and burning around 600-900 kcal a day through cardio, i was getting pretty flabby and getting a lot of cellulite as well. Seems strange because you almost feel like you should lose weight if you work that hard and eat so little. I also burned away all of my muscle. I
I have been given some great advice, and am really trying to increase my calories and decrease my cardio although mentally it is very hard to do. I have been eating around 1500-1800 for the past week, and only doing cardio about 3 days a week, but have greatly increased my strength training. I havent gained or lost any weight, but i am monitoring my inches and i do already feel better. -------------- -- please help me-- -Alison |

Awesome job Alison, be patient and you will see results. Your body needs time to adjust.:)-------------- "One Ring to rule them all; One Ring to find them; One Ring to bring them all, and in the Darkness bind them." -LOTR Trilogy |

Lucy, why don't you try 1500 cal. per day and see what happens, give it a few weeks and remember the less weight your body needs to lose the harder it gets. Be patient, consistant and hang in there, results will come in due time:)-------------- "One Ring to rule them all; One Ring to find them; One Ring to bring them all, and in the Darkness bind them." -LOTR Trilogy |

We need more input from people like Alison. Jump in there whenever you see posts like this. People that have done this for a couple of decades aren't listened to like the recent converts. :)

For the past 2 weeks I have increased by daily calorie intake to 1660 and I haven't seen results yet. So my original question really is to find out how long this took to loose when for when someone increased their daily calorie intake (if their daily calorie intake was originally too low.) Did anyone see results within a week or was it longer as in a month?

It's different for everybody. Your body has to adjust to the changes which can take a while. Don't concentrate on the #'s right now, how do you feel? Are you exercising at all or maybe to much? Are the 1660 cal. all healthy foods? I know it's difficult to be patient, I've been there believe me. But if you hang in there and make it through the tuff times you will be rewarded. If there was an easy way, we'd all be perfect:) I would still try 1500 cal. a day, make sure it's all healthy, low fat, low carb and get plenty of exercise and water. Give it another 4 weeks with that adjustment. Don't give up!!! Nothing good will follow that.-------------- "One Ring to rule them all; One Ring to find them; One Ring to bring them all, and in the Darkness bind them." -LOTR Trilogy |

lucy I know better than most how frustrating this is. BB1fit and others have said this that I am going to say to you and I hope you take it to heart, these are my words but their message: If you are looking to lose weight you need to create a calorie deficit. This can be done by lowering calories and or adding cardio. First try lowring the calories. Then slowly add in cardio. During this time weight lifting is most important as that helps manitain muscle mass.
Ok Lucy they also have said and I am a true believer of this that if you are trying to lose and are not seeing the reuslts you are simply not eating right. I know I was in the same boat as you. I truly thought I was eating 2000-2500cals a day. It was not until I used a tracker (like fitday.com) to add up what I ate that I found out I was eating 4000 or more. I would really stringly urge you to keep a record each day what you eat. Be totaly honest, if you have a doughnut add that in. Then after a week see where you are. I dont know so much if i truly agree with what mutt is saying for your case. That is true in many cases. But it seems to me you are in the same situation as I. You are close in weight to your goal, but have some toning to do and fat to lose. Correct me please everyone if i am wrong, but this is what i have learned. You do need to make sure you are eating enough, if you were eating so little, your body went into starvation mode and was storing everything you ate as fat and was burning all of your muscle to surrive. Give your body more time to adjust, if you were doing this for years, allow your body to realize it is being fed and no longer needs to store the food you eat as fat. also, i do not think that cardio is your answer. I think you will chance burning any muscle you have left or create. I think weight training is the way to go, every pound of lean body mass burns more calories than fat does just to exist in your body. Therefore if you change your fat to muscle, the muscle you gain will also help to remove the fat. And it becomes easier to burn fat. When i was at the gym yesterday, i took the time to look around, and what ive been reading seemed so true. The people on the cardio equipment had more of a puffy, undefined appearance, where as the people in the free weight area seemed more defined and lean. I think you should stick with this, trust me i want to quit to, its easier to eat very little calories and do tons of cardio, but if thats what put you where you were happy with yourself, you wouldnt have joined this forum. Give it time. I think it will work out in the end. I am right there with you.

I also meant to add that cardio is also great, but not every day. Ive been told to do HIIT once or twice a week and cardio no more than 3 times a week, on my off training days for weights.-------------- -- please help me-- -Alison |

Thank you Alison! You hit the nail on the head and summarized exactly what I was saying. Before 2 weeks ago I was intaking maybe 1100 calories a day and my body was basically starving and I didn't realize it because I was listening to everyone say that you need a calorie deficit. I am going to take your suggestion and continue to eat a healthy diet and stay at around 1600. It is so hard for me to reach this for some reason. My stomach just doesn't want to eat anymore but I guess I have to just be patient. I definitely am going to stick with this and see how it goes. It is hard to go two weeks without a change.

So, I weighed myself after two weeks of increasing my calories and I haven't lost a pound. This is quite frustrating but I am going to continue. If anyone has been in a similar situation, please let me know as I need to be assured that this will really work and I am not just going to plateau.

Lucy - I didn't go back and read all the posts again but are you doing a resistance program and have you used the old trusty tape measure. The weight scale isn't a reliable gauge if you're lifting weights also.

I have to agree with mike on the tape measure. Muscle weighs more than fat. If you are finally fueling your body and adding in weight training, you are going to build muscle. The muscle weighs more than fat, but takes up less room. Once you establish a good amount of muscle, the muscle is going to survive off of the fat as well as calories in, this is when you will see weight loss. It is way to soon to give up. Focus on the tape measure because you may not be losing weight yet, but you may already be losing inches. And if you think about it, inches are better to lose than weight. People do not know how much you weigh, the number on the scale is what you know. People can see your body though, and a smaller body is worth more than a lower weight. Dont give up. Build your muscle, each pound of muscle you gain burns an extra 50 kcal a day. Thats a weight loss plan right there...-------------- -- Trying is so much harder than quiting -- -Alison |

Where should I measure? I just measured around the middle of my belly button and then right under my tush where the widest point of my hips are. Is this correct?

I do mid arm, mid thighs, upper thighs (largest part) butt, hips, abdominal (just below belly button),belly button level, waist (smallest part), and chest. The more places you measure, the closer you can monitor improvement

Another week has come and gone. I weighed myself this morning and have not lost and pound and have not lost an inch. The only positive I can see with increasing my calories is that I haven't gained a pound. So that is good. But I really need help. I am starting to get depressed about this. I am working so hard and not seeing any results. How much longer should I hang on?
