I am really new to this whole thing and I have my work out schedule, I was reading though that everyone says not to do cardio befoe working out. I have been running on the treadmill for about 20 minutes before I start the weight training. My goal is to loose about 25 pounds of fat, or what I think is fat. I am 19F and weigh about 160 and I am only about 5'5. What should I do about the cardio?

Split the cardio and weights by 6 hours if possible. Better yet do cardio mostly on non weight days. If you lift right after cardio, you can't lift as intensely.

Lift heavy as you can. Lifting builds muscle. Muscle burns more fat. Hope that helps.

That was phrased wrong. Muscle burns more calories than fat is what I meant.

Okay, so then if I want to loose the most weight I want to lift on like mon wed and fri, and cardio tues, thur, and sat? I don't want to be bulky, just toned. So does that mean I want to lift less weight?

Introduce HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) as your cardio routine. There are tons of posts regarding HIIT and how to use it. Do it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning every other day. You'll burn TONS of calories.

And, the more musle you have the more cals you burn at a sedintary activity level. So pump that iron too.

DIET DIET DIET, I dont mean eat lettuce once a day and thats it, read the posts on frequency and size of meals and check bbFit1's bodybuilders grocery list (do a search, it has like a bazillion replies).

If you burn calories below what you need (Base calories) youll lose fat. PERIOD!

In 8 weeks I've lost 45 lbs total. It works if you maake it :)

Depfan - the only dumb question is the one you don't ask but I do usually type in the subject below in the Type your question here & see if someone else already asked first - all of mine so far have been answered here that way

Clandress, I posted a question not too long ago about cardio on an empty stomach and I received an answer from a professional...Aaron I think it was, and he said that doing anything, even cardio on an empty stomach is not a good idea beacuse you'll burn lean muscle instead of fat. He mentioned it was because of the Krebs cycle. So your post got me kinda confused....what's the truth???Help!

Diana123, please dont let me detour you from what a professional says as am by no means a professional myself. But thier 2 distinct arguments as to when its best to do cardio and as far as know this is the jest of them.

On states that after a fast(sleeping for 8 hours) a persons glycogen reserves are completly exhausted there for the body has to rely on fat as a means of fuel. This supposedly forces the body to up your matabolism. Its also been said that the body is more apt to be in a ketonic early in the morning, but thats my memory talking and not fact.

The other states that small meal of 300-400 calories an hour before training will allow you to train harder. You will get about a 10% increase in metabolic rate alone from eating the food, you will be able to train harder as blood glucose levels will not go to super low levels, and you will have a better anabolic hormone response.

My PERSONAL experience is that an empty stomach produces better results for a HIIT type schedule. Keep in mind that I only do HIIT(20 mins) and it may be completly different for people who may do low impact distance type cardio.

Also remember that most of the calories burned from cardio are done in your rested state when the body cools back down.

I would love to hear arguments supporting or discrediting either of these theroys.

deppfan, we women want to lift heavy no matter what our goal is; losing weight, gaining weight, slimming down, putting on muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. And when you have more muscle you can get away with more calories in a day without putting on fat. Do your cardio on off days or if you have to do it on the same day, do it after lifting. But keep lifting weights and lifting as heavy as you can. Keep going up with your weights. Good luck.
