I'm VERY VERY frustrated right now. Tyler and I are now living with his grandmother for the next 6months to help get the house cleaned up and ready to sell since grandpa passed 3 weeks ago.
I am running into a HUGE block when it comes to our eating habits because Grandma's are so bad. She doesn't eat breakfast, has a piece or 2 of bread with butter for lunch, and when she cooks dinner(I've been doing most of the dinner cooking thank god) it consists of hamburger gravy with potatoes, or like last night, a rice and sausage dish that had been in the freezer who knows how long, with potatoes and bread.
I'm trying to clean out her cupboards and freezer one item a day so she doesn't notice me cleaning out all the crap, but how do I go about bringing in margarine instead of the butter(that sits in the butter dish for weeks)and other healthier foods?? I don't want to overstep my bounds, but the way she eats is not ok for Tyler and I. HELP!!

I think your already doing things the right way. If she is older, it will be hard to push a change in her eating habits, so personally I wouldn't try to. Continue to make most of the dinners and make them healthy. If she doesn't like what you're making, try making what she normally would, just in a healthy manner. If this does't work, let her continue to make her own meals, and you make yours. Let her know your trying to loose weight and need to eat the right foods. Just because she doesn't eat breakfast doesn't mean you can't. Maybe she'll join in sometime. Continue to clean up the "crap", but be mindful that it is her "crap" and she may resent you throwing it away. When you buy groceries, buy what you normally would, no reason that both margarine and butter can be available in the house. It will just require more willpower on your part to avoid the "crap". Good Luck, sounds like a challenge for you! Just remember, she's been feeding herself for a long time and you are the guests, so be mindful of her situation.
-------------- Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.

He he he...I get the feeling you didn't like the use of the word crap. Sorry, I just didn't know how else to explain it...aside from the food issue, there truly is "crap" all around the house....10 bottles of expired/near expiring salad dressing, 6 costco sized packages of freezer burned hot dogs...homecanned items from the 80's that have gone bad,car parts, empty bleach bottles.....just lots of junk around.
She's told me that I can clean out some things(like her spice cabinet)and I will, but I really am trying to clean things out and at the same time respect her space.
My biggest concern is that there isn't enough space for both ways of eating. She has a very small fridge/freezer combo, and 75% of her cupboards are filled with medicine. Right now I have added ff creamer, some frozen veggies, chicken breasts, some lean ground beef and eggs, and everything is full.
Maybe we can get a mini fridge or something to keep in our room to store the extra healthy food in.....I am just at a loss.

Actually, I love the work crap, it replaces $hit around my house, now my kids use it all the time..holy crap, what the crap, oh crap.... not sure that's any better-lol. I totally agree that you should get rid of anything outdated/gone bad. You may just need to shop more frequently so as not to store too much at one time. The mini fridge is a good idea as well. It's only been 3 weeks, so I'm sure you'll all adjust soon. Once you get rid of alot of the crap, you'll probably find there's more storage room. I couldn't even imagine moving in with my inlaws...love em, but could not live with them!!! Good Luck!

That is true..once we get through all the expired things there will be more space. I also want to get in the habit of shopping more frequently...get away from frozen veggies, start using fresh...shopping oncce a week I can acomplish that as well as keep the amount in the fridge small.
