What are the bonuses and downsides (not necessarily bad stuff, things that it doesn't work as well) of circuit training?

You tone your body, you burn fat and it doesn't necessairly has to take a lot of time.
Circuit training is also half cardio half weight training.

BUT circuit training will not give you big muscles.

My weekly work out program consists of three days of heavy compound weight lifting and two days of fast circuit training. This works for me, but you have to see what works for you.

Nina is right. I personally do one week of circuit training a month. Consistent heavy training causes alot of stress to the body so I use circuits on my "active rest week".

I don't care for straight cardio training so use circuit training to give me at least some cardio affect. I vary cycles fairly often but for now, do a split routine with heavy compound movements the first 2 days of the week and high intensity circuit the last 2 days. Works for me but I'm not looking to compete.

Good advice so far! Hamadryad, it really depends on your goals. From your profile, it sounds like circuit training may be for you as you are really not interested in gaining much muscle mass.

Good luck with your Martial Arts training...which one are you practicing? I used to train/teach Hapkido (the Korean version of Judo and Aikido combined).

Right now I'm doing Shotokan Karate and Freestyle Wrestling, I used to do Judo and Hapkido, and I'm planning on learning Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga and Capoeira soon.

I want to gain some muscle mass, right now I have absolutely no padding, so it hurts quite a bit hitting the ground, plus I'd like to put on some more weight, hit the 170lbs-180lbs range (I doubt I'll be able to get more)

You'll get a toned body quick and more energy.
It's not only for fat loss, but you'll be working with the fast muscle fibres, stressing your body and avoid the routines.
