OK, I need a substitute for the close grip chins. Is there another machine I could use? The bar at the gym is in an area that I don't go into yet. I am still shy about working out in that area of the gym and it feels as though I am center of attention on that bar. I really want to do my full work out. Can someone help?

Paula - assuming you have access to a lat machine - you can do close grip pull downs. It also gives you some more latitude on working up to your body weight. In general - think about the motion you're doing for any exercise and chances are there's a substitute on other stations.
