Ahhhh...don't sweat it. Even those aspartamine warnings, the tests/studies done with this stuff the equivalent amount to a human is pretty dam high, and unless you are a lab rat, much more than you are probably going to take in.
If you prefer, the splenda is fine. There is bad news about it also...hell, there is bad stuff about dam near everything. What is one to eat....you have to enjoy life a bit. Moderation...you will be fine. -------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

I, like many others just have to drink a soft drink from time to time. But sodas really have no business in anyones diet. So I started drinking Diet Coke a long time ago when I wanted a soda. Well as we all know Diet Coke contains aspartame and the big warning on the can CONTAINS PHENYLALANINE. Anyways after reading about aspartame I cut off sodas completely. Well now they have come out with Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda so I bought a 12-pack yesterday. So I'm wondering if this stuff is Ok to include in my diet? It actually tastes pretty good and I haven't heard anything bad about Splenda yet. Anybody else drinking this stuff?

Aspartame is the safest of all because it's the most tested and besides that it's the BEST tasting.
Make your own Ketchup with aspartame and tomato sauce, this Thanksgiving I made candied yams by cooking sweet potatos and once cooked I added cinnamon and aspartame and everyone loved it! Life would suck with out Aspartame, no sweetener for tea, coffee, cereal and the list goes on for me. I even toss it in my PWO Shake, Milk, Vanilla Whey, Dash of Cinnamon and 1 Aspartame packet. |

Definitely agree with you there SFG, I enjoy the regular Diet Coke better than the Splenda. I don't know what it is but something is missing from the splenda kind.

Holy crap! I went to that site you posted bb1 and wow! I think those might have to go in the trash! Sounds like aspartame may be the lesser of 2 evils in this case.

Giving up all of the sugar substitutes is not a bad choice. One less thing to worry about. It's a taste we all are addicted to, something like fat.-------------- A little discipline at the table and at the gym might help reduce that belly! Ivan Montreal Canada (City of Festivals) |

I personally can't stand the taste of any sugar substitutes. My protein powder is the only thing I consume that has a sugar substitute...I can taste it, but I don't have much choice. I bought a box of Splenda, tried it once, then gave it away to a Splenda lover. They all have a nasty after taste, even stevia. But even if I could stand the taste, I would probably still avoid sugar substitutes since I just think it is always best to stay with foods that are as close to their natural state as possible.
And regarding the warning CONTAINS PHENYLALANINE, that is a warning for people who were born with PKU. www.medhelp.org/lib/pku.htm www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsSupplements/Phenylalaninecs.html |

Even for people without PKU, consuming lots of diet sodas, like many people I know do thinking it's ok cuz there are no calories or sugar, is not a good idea. And as far as the taste, I hated diet sodas but after making myself drink them for a while I acquired the taste for them and now I can't stand regular sodas. Just like my switch to skim milk from whole. But I drink maybe 2 a week so I think I'm far from the dangers that sugar substitutes might cause.

I wasn't suggesting that diet sodas were only bad for people with PKU, just pointing out that that particular warning about phenylalanine was for their benefit.
When I was younger I used to drink diet sodas all the time. For me it seems to have gone the other way...I got to a point where I just couldn't stand the taste anymore and decided no soda was preferable. |
