Canadian winter has hit with a vengeance these last few weeks. It's been between -25 and -45 for two weeks, and snowing like crazy except for 15 minutes last night when we had a downpour of freezing rain. The problem is that ever since the weather has gotten ugly, I've been desperately craving carbs. Bad carbs. Lots of white, bad carbs! I've been having dreams about white toast with butter and honey! I'm really having a hard time keeping my carb intake within my daily limits. Is this related to the cold weather? I'm thinking that it's some sort of evolutionary survival thing. I'm like the little squirrel that tries to fatten up for the winter! Maybe because my body fat is down quite a bit my body is attempting self-preservation. I've been eating enough food, but it's so (so so so) hard to eat brown rice and birdseed bread when I want nothing more than a giant plate of spaghetti!

Feel free to give in to them every so often. Set yourself up reward days. If you don't do this, you are going to end up binging instead. Reward yourself with that piece of bread with butter and honey, make it once every so many days or weeks for good dieting, and when you eat it, savor it, eat it slowly, and then get right back on the wagon! This will help to keep those cravings in check. If you are eating 5 meals per day, that is 35 meals per week, 70 meals every 2 weeks. If you reward yourself after 70 meals, this is not bad. You are not training for competition....

Oh yes we got the same problem here (be quiet Michael!) It's coooooold and everybody is eating a lot more and got terrible cravings for carbs.........

I guess it's not only the cold but also the fact of the sky being all grey and dark and maybe one get a little depressed and bored SO we tend to snack.

Light some candles, drink some tea, eat chewing gum and knit a sweater!! (o;

I remember reading something about how sadness leads to cravings for bad carbs as comfort foods. Perhaps the weather is affecting your moods?

Vitamins are good. I'm in a great mood, thanks in no small part to water fountain guy! I'm having an easier time since the weather warmed up this week a little. Glad to know I'm not alone.

Its why I chose the winter time to bulk :o) by the time it starts to get warm I will need to start thinking about losing the fat. I’m up to 10kg now (in 3weeks) and my %bf only gone up by 1% that makes about 8.5kg lean gains. Oh sorry got to go, time to eat again mmm…

Even more scary - he said kg, so it's more like almost 19 pounds!

Yikes!

I was on a hard stripping cycle before Christmas so I was ready to but down extra muscle with a bulking cycle. There is also a fair amount of water retention in there; the increase in my abundant glucose levels takes in several pounds of extra water (the opposite of the apparent loss when people start a hard diet). I have also just finished my first creatine cycle after a couple of years off which will contribute; this effect is amplified for me more as I have a high ratio of muscle in my body weight.

I did not say lean muscle gains but with a little hindsight I can see how “lean gains” is a clearly ambiguous statement; I meant it as all gains other than fat. I monitor my %bf carefully, I know there is some delayed fat deposition but not a substantial proportion. The rest comes predominantly from muscle gains that I can clearly see by an (average) increase in my lifts of 20% over the same period.

Yeah, tell me about cold weather. I'm in the northeast and we got blasted with subzero temps too. Really mucked up my running program and I hate treadmills. lol

I'm with you there DP, I usually do my cardio at night up at the local track. It is way too damn cold for that. And I am like you, I hate treadmills. 5 minutes is like 5 hours to me! LOL....
