Hi i want to start by doing 3 sets of every exercise but i'm confused about what constitutes a set.

For example does 12 reps (break) another 12 reps (break) and then another 12 reps = 3 sets?

Or is it

12 reps (break) 12 reps (break) and another 12 reps = 1 set?

I'm just confused about which one equals a full set.

Any help would be great, thanks

In your example, 12reps would equal 1 set.

However, I do question your program. How do you know you want to do 3 sets of every exercise?

Yes, if doing sets of 12, as per your example.

I understand being a beginner, but why do you think you need to do 3 sets of 12 as a beginner. What program are you doing.

As an example, I am a beginner, but I am doing a program which calls for 3 sets of 5 reps (AKA: 3x5). Also, Before I start my actual work sets, I need to warmup, and I have a warmup routine which is working for me, and vary in actual reps. These Warmups do not get counted in my total 3x5 Work Sets.

Good Luck
