Because I have have a jar of creatine laying around my house (about a year old), and I'm not that into taking supplements (not to sound like a snob), would it be beneficial to just every once-in-a-while take a heaping spoonful of creatine (like one or two a week)?

I just threw mine away a few weeks ago as I believe you use it and use it right or not at all!
For gains you need to use it and use it all the time with a cycle and it worked but when I decide just to use it for recovery purposes it wasn't a smart move and BCAA's have taken over the recovery supplement for me!

Thanks for your feedback, I've heard that taking it BEFORE working out might give you a boost for that workout. Would it be worth it then, or is what I heard an old wives tale?

Won't give you a boost, but it will be better metabolized into the muscle for future workouts.
It won't hurt you, but if you don't see the results you are after, then you know why. If nothing else, it will keep your creatine stores at least at baseline.
