I have been doing deathlifts for a few weeks now. Somebody noticed that I performed the first rep well but started to arch my back from the second rep on. I know this isn’t the way it should be. I tried to correct it by lowering the weight but even with an empty bar I cannot hold the good form for more than one rep. As an alternative I tried to use the smith machine to do deathlifts. If I use this machine I have no problem keeping my back straight. Is this an alternative for the deathlift or is it just a waist of energy ? ( I have never seen anybody else doing it.)

Well first off there really is no good alt to the deadlift. And secondly a arch in the lower back is ok. If the arch gets to pronounced that is bad the question is do you feel the lower back working? If so then contintue to do it. The upper back should be "straight" and rmember that not everyone has the exact same path for each exercise.

And i mean the natural arch your lower back already has. Since I have never seen you do it I really do not know what arching you are talking about.

Try a trapbar.

You could try a variation using dumbells, I did that for a while and then I was able to actually use the bar. Silly me, I can't remember how that variation went...I will try to look it up.
