Hi,

I've been workin out for about 6 mths now and cannot put on much weight. I cant have too much carbohydrates as recommended by FT due to being a Type2 diabetic. Is anyone else out there with a similar problem and can someone advice on possible diets to help. Also after not workin out for about 2 weeks I seem to really lose size drastically!!.

My wife is a diabetic, and has had great success with the high protein, low carb diet. she no longer takes any shots, her blood sugars are so good she doesn't even have to hardly check them anymore, just every great while. She is now training for competition bodybuilding. If you would like to speak with her, why not email her. She said she would be glad to talk to you. Much more in depth than I could do...I will send you her address. Good luck.

Great thing we have you bb1.
Why not write a little article about the basics for dieting for diabetics while weight training?...... Everybody could learn a little there!

I'm in the pre-stages of diabetes, and my blood sugar was completely out of control until I started working out. I can't follow the perfect fitness diet either. What's really working for me is to pair my carbs with lean protein. I find the spikes in my blood sugar aren't as severe. My body fat has started to decrease and my energy is way up. Also, I find that if I take a few days off, I don't have the desire to drink my water, and end up dehydrated and smaller-looking

I have been a type II diabetic for five years and from the beginning I tried all the different diets with not much success. I was taking insulin and oral medication. I can proudly say that I am no longer on any meds and I feel better than I have ever felt before in my life. One year ago I met my husband who is a body builder and he introduced me to a whole new lifestlye. I now workout 5 times a week and training to be in my first bodybuilding competion in May of 2003. I found that the protien diets that many body builders use was very beneficial to my health. The only problem that I seem to have now is that my sugar stay low. Remember there are alot of good carbs out there that you can eat all you want of. Salads are good and so is broccoli!!!!(I check my sugars more now than before because of this) When they get to low I always have my glucose tablets on hand. You really need to have the support of your doctor also, as mine can not believe the strides that I have made. Diabetics can be bodybuilders. If you would like to see one of my diets that I have used please feel free to e-mail me and I will forward it to you.

What about the Atkins diet? It's super high in protein and ultra low in carbs. I know the fat is high but in the absence of lots of carbs, it shouldn't have a negative impact. I have found that the bad thing about fat isn't the fat but the calories associated with them. 9 calories per gram as opposed to 4 for protein and carbs. I am interested in opinions about the diet from the community relating to fitness training. I do believe that low glycemic carbs are necessary for healthy individuals trying to gain muscle and size without adding unwanted fat. I try to keep my ratio's around 40/40/20. I find the suggested fat on the nutritional guide much to low for me.

rkahl....a few tidbits that are a knock against the Atkins Diet...remember,I think this is the second time it has been around.
1) Long term excessive low carb intake discourages optimal thyroid function.

2) Unregulated saturated fat intake decreases insulin sensitivity (along with other detrimental health
aspects).

3) Both of the above seem to encourage carbohydrate intolerance once carb intake is resumed.

Very low carb diets should be modified to keep the thyriod (and metabolism) up-regulated and should
not be followed for long periods of time.

things to think about....

Thanks BB. Good stuff to think about. Balance seems always to pop up in every aspect of life including our diets.

I have tried a few of the Atkins products and found the favor of them very undesirable. Myoplex is one product as far as meal replacements that have a wonderful favor and texture. They give me the carbs and protiens that I need with out the excess sugars. Watch out for the candy bars out there too. Sugar alcohols seem to make my sugars rise. I hope everyone out there is going to have a wonderful Thanksgiving and remember the first exercise my husband taught me, They are called pushaways. lol

Hi I am new to the forum and am also diabetic and have been for 13 yrs the atkins diet is one of the most dangerous diets especially for a diabetic as it works by increasing ketones which means your body eats its own body fat (using it rather then storing it)which sounds good apart from ketones are a poison released from your liver and can make you very ill For many diabetics who have had a bad infection they usually call it diabetic keto-acidosis(i may have spelt it wrong. hope this info helps .:)

Recent study, though small, very enlightening. From Mercola...

Scientists have proved for the first time that fructose, a cheap form of sugar used in thousands of food products and soft drinks, can damage human metabolism and is fueling the obesity crisis.

Fructose, a sweetener usually derived from corn, can cause dangerous growths of fat cells around vital organs and is able to trigger the early stages of diabetes and heart disease.

Over 10 weeks, 16 volunteers on a controlled diet including high levels of fructose produced new fat cells around their heart, liver and other digestive organs. They also showed signs of food-processing abnormalities linked to diabetes and heart disease. Another group of volunteers on the same diet, but with glucose sugar replacing fructose, did not have these problems.

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and I am looking for a diabetic diet. I am currently on a raw food diet and have experienced changes in energy, fatigue, and better sleep cycle. However, I would like to have a more balanced diet. I have type 2 diabetes and would like to reduce my medication intake. I am also disabled and currently have had knee replacement surgery. I am due for a second surgery on my left knee soon and would like to be healthy and in shape during this procedure. Any assist or suggestion for exercise and diet would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
