I was wondering if I could post my diet here for guidance. Im finding it difficult to know what is right and wrong. Im going by what I used to eat when on weight watchers. However Im sure it could be improved further.

Breakfast:
2/3 cup natural muesli with <2% fat milk. (The milk is what's in the fridge, changing to skim shopping day.)
1 cup coffee
Fruit, either an apple or mandarin (tangerine)

Snack:
Protein shake and 2 plain crisp bread.

Lunch:
Normally leftovers, whatever we have in the fridge. Today will be a ham sandwich with tomato and onion.

Snack:
celery and lettuce with sultanas (raisens)

Dinner:
Chicken stir fry, 1/2 cup rice (uncooked), chicken breast, capsicum (red pepper), onion, peas and corn, mixed frozen vegies.

Snack:
No fat yogurt, 1 cup.

When I write it down like that it doesn't look too flash.

Also are eggs cheap in America? I've noticed a lot of people have 5 or six egg whites for breakfast, by that I would be buying 1 carton every two days. Or approx 4 cartons a week, cartons of eggs over here are almost $5 and Im not sure I could afford to spend $20 week on just eggs, although I would like to, I love eggs.

I have a shop bought protein powder and for the life of me I can't find what it's main ingredient is. Do you think I need to go to a health food shop for the whey powder? I can't wait until I have this figured out, it's a bit confusing for me as a newbie.

You seem to be on the high end of the carbs. I would add more protein into your diet and add some good fats.
Eggs here are about $2.00 dzn cdn. But we eat 5-6 at a time for the protein and get rid of the yolk. Try and change your muesli to oatmeal (porridge) and try sprinkling protein powder onto it. But get in more protein in any case. Also eat more food. Hope this helps.

Thanks carivan,
less carbs and more protein. I was eating oatmeal every day but stopped for some reason. I have to eat more? Wow, Ok. I wish the price of eggs were that cheap here, we could easily afford $2 every two days.

Thanks again

How about tuna, chicken breast, lean pork. Have you checked out bb1fit's post "grocery list for a bodybuilder"? Very good ideas on it.
Good Luck.

Yes he has some great ideas, Im going to add lots of stuff to my shopping this week. Unfortunately I don't like fish and it's terrible, Im pretty much wiping out a whole food group. The only time I eat tuna is in tuna and rice and that's a no-no.

Thanks for your patience carivan, Im learning heaps as I go along.

DeeTee - switch to brown rice and tuna and rice can be a yes-yes. I have found that the parboiled brown rice is pretty fast and tasty. It also keeps me going longer - when i eat white rice I am hungry within half an hour, brown rice keeps me until my next meal (3 hours)

Really?! Oh that's fantastic. It's one of my favorite foods and I thought I would have to spare it for special occasions.

So how often can I have it? Once a week? It's only a lunch time thing because my OH hates it. He's not home at lunch time.
Thanks heaps,

can i get an amen on the parboiled brown rice? that's also really good with a can of organic black beans cooked with garlic and chili powder over it. that's what i eat when i am poor, which is quite often, because black beans are 79 cents and brown rice is like $1.59.

oh, and i boil my rice with chili powder in the water because i cannot get enough spice in my food. that is also quite tasty.

Howdie have you always not eaten bread? Or did you cut it out of your diet? Im was a big bread eater and Im finding it hard to cut it out completely. Same as potatoes, I was bought up this way and it's really hard to implement changes that you've been doing and using all your life. Some how it doesn't seem the same if I don't have spuds for dinner or bread for lunch. Any advice for cutting them out?
Thanks

i used to eat bread all the time, now i just don't buy it. occasionally i'll have it if i'm eating out somewhere, but it's not in my house. i think that's the real key - not having things in your house that you don't want to eat. honestly, i have no sugar (with the exception the maltodextrin i spike my insulin with post-workout), no simple carbs, no butter or margarine, no bleached flour, etc., in my home.

when i go to the store i make it a point only to buy the things that are going to help me lose the fat i've never been able to get rid of. mostly those things include, brown rice, tuna, black beans, spinach, chicken breasts, and apples, just to name a few. i also buy chili powder and other spicy things because i find that spice can pick up the slack that you leave when you eliminate the old "good" stuff.

i think that after a while when you just tell yourself that you're not going to have something anymore, and then you never buy it, it's like it's not even an option to consume anymore. i did this with soft drinks in 1997 and haven't had one since. now i don't even think about it. this is not to say that i'll never eat bread again, because i like sandwiches, but if i do eat it it'll be whole wheat.

anyway, what it all really comes down to is making a decision and sticking with it. if you have to make the transition gradually, then so be it, but make the commitment and you'll end up where you want to be in the long run.

I've emailed you carivan, it's a long one. Thanks for helping me.

Howdie, thank you heaps, unfortunately we will always have bread in the house. The kids take sandwiches for lunch, to school. Im going to have to re-train them to eat whole grain bread instead of white. Argh, that's going to be fun! I've already got them eating more fruit and less rubbish so that's a plus. However! I just had a wonderful thought! They love tuna and rice too, maybe I could give them some to take to school. If they don't get sick of the same sandwiches every day then Im sure they wont get sick of tuna and rice every day.

Now there's only the OH to train. That's going to be harder than the kids! He eats like a horse, all the wrong things until recently. I've started bringing home 2 bread rolls every morning and filling it with salad and he says he loves them. I might have them trained before I know it! Thanks again Howdie.
