Hi,

About two years ago I became a professional wrestler at the age of 16. I am now 18 years of age. I have always been small, but when I became a pro I needed to put on body mass so I started training. In 1 ½ years I gained 3 stones, roughly 42lbs and was nice and toned. I have always had a low body fat percentage. Because my aim was to gain mass I did very little cardio work. I started eating healthily, and then I got injured.

I was unable to train or wrestle for 6 months and all that work turned into fat. I currently way about 190lbs and a lot of it is fat. You can still see the muscle underneath it but I don’t know where to start. 2 weeks ago I began training again. I have now included a lot more cardio, ie. Running, and rowing. I’m hitting the weights lightly until I get my body back into it again.

My question is, how do I lose all this body fat without losing the mass I gained? I’ve done some research and spoke to people who have told me to cut out my carbs. Okay, so far so good…but now I’m stuck for meal time. I eat a lot of bread, pasta, tuna etc.

What do you guys suggest I eat? I’m really stuck about this. I’ve always enjoyed a quick tuna/salad sandwhich when I’m a little hungy…or toast with my breakfast. Do I have to cut these out? I’ve been told eat more fruit…which fruits, and they are hardly a mealtime substitute are they? More protein I hear…so whack more shakes down? Every day?

I need to know now…I have 6 weeks until my first match back in the ring and want to be in the best shape I can be. I have no time for messing around. I’m now fully back into my training and things.

Also, I just signed up to the progressive gains program to get my muscles back into it. Should I now be signing up to the weight loss and tone or what…baring in mind I only want to lose body fat. I’m also on the 2nd week of the ab blast program.

I’m going to start doing cardio in a morning, and also I do it after workouts but was told today that it is better to do it before a workout…what are your thoughts on this?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE….I need this advice now. I don’t have much time, and this is my career on the line.

Thanks,
Moz

Moz, you can maintain most of your muscle mass by keeping your protein intake high (1-1.5g per pound of bodyweight). You'll also need a clean diet (check out ft's nutritional section for a recommendation).

I would recommend that you don't do your cardio before working with weights. Do it at another time of day or on your non-weight training days.

Good luck!

If you're trying to do the lo carb thing, just remember not to go too overboard with it, do it a couple days, then up your carbs another day or two, and over and over again. Lo carbs all of the time will make you feel weak. So on those lo carb days, yes, you need to cut out the bread and the pasta, eat some more vegetables, maybe one piece of fruit, make a salad out of your tuna (you can use some fat free dressing (italian is yummy) and some veggies and mix it all up), for breakfast, how about some scrambled egg whites or boiled and a lean meat of some kind, also you can keep your protein up by continuing with your protein shakes (made with water would be best). Hope I helped some.
