different squat method

I don't have access to a Smith machine or freeweights. When my program calls for squats, I do something a bit different and wanted opinions as to whether it is OK or not.

I attach a lat bar to a low pulley. I then bend at the knees and grab the bar with my arms straight. I then lift up (maintaining a straight back and with no movement in my arms - everything is bending at the knees). I then slowly bend back down to complete the rep.

I feel my thighs working, but I do feel a tightening of my lower back (which I assume is what you get when you do "real" squats).

Is this OK as a replacement for "true squats"?

I think you may have found a rudimentary replacement for deadlifts...but not squats. Come to think of it, it would be hard to replace squats, unless you had something you can carry on your traps to replace a barbell with weights.

Well, let me see if I can explain this good on paper..... Take a barbell, put your legs a little more than shoulder width apart, hold the barbell between your legs and squat...keeping your toes pointed outward. I read it on one of my magazines and tried it. It works really well, when you can't get a machine.
