dips behind back

lastnight doing my first workout when it came to doing the dips behind the back, i found that my wrists were very sore/tender. i don't want to quit doing them but any suggestions i guess to strengthen my wrists? should they hurt like that?

The wrists can be a weak point. I like to add some fairly heavy wrist curls to my leg workout between squat sets to make use of the recovery time.
