i went to the doctor for my physical, and he said that he knew i worked out a lot and wanted to know what supplements i took. i told him protein, a multivitamin, vitamin e, glucosamine, and i had started a creatine cycle 2 days before i came. i stopped taking zma about a month ago. he wanted to do a lot of bloodwork.... i got the results back in the mail yesterday and it says that my SGOT level was at 42 (normal being 15 to 41)... and that i should stop taking ALL SUPPLEMENTS IMMEDIATELY... he was adament about that in the room even before the results of the test were in. does anyone know anything about SGOT level or what it means.... i'm a little clueless, but i don't see how any of the supplements i have taken other than creatine hurt me at all. he also tried to tell me that most proteins have "other stuff" in them that is terrible for you... and that zma in most cases is not just zma. just tell me what you guys think.

SGOT or (Serum Glutamic-Oxalocetic Transaminase) is an enzyme found in almost every organ in your body... in particular your liver, kidney and heart and to a lesser extent the pancreas and even muscle tissue.
Back when I was a punk teenager, I did LOTS of illegal substances that would raise SGOT levels to a whopping 700+. Because of the abuse I have done to my body, I will always have these elevated levels of enzymes in my system. Now, having said that, it has been shown that creatine collects in the liver and kidneys, IF, and I do mean "IF" you do not properly flush your system with ALOT, and again, I do mean "ALOT" of water. I dont know if this answers your question, but my advice is this.... LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR!!! bb1 seems to know alot about this subject (chemical makeup and whatnot) and hopefully he will see it and reply. -------------- If your muscle wont allow you to do the last few reps, make your mind and heart do it. Your muscles will thank them later. |

get 2nd opinion..if you have the money.....thats border line high in my opinion. How much creatine you taking?
I'd stil get a 2nd opinion, I been taken creatine since 10/11th grade and my doctor has never told me that I need to stop. I never had any major blood work done, bu ti have had drug test......and the pee in a cups tests......nothing out of ordinary. -------------- The following, has not be approved by the FDA or FT, it was not meant to diagnose, treat,or prevent any diease(s) Please consult a moderator or doctor before using any of the suggestions or comments. |

bigandrew, the reason it's not showing in your "pee test" SHOULD in fact be a concern for you.... that means that it is collecting / pooling in the body. The kidneys are your bodys "Brita" filter for urine. I ceartinly think a second opinion is a good idea, but to equate that it's safe because your urine is clean , would be incorrect and possibly detrimental.
ZMA, which is just a fancy name for Zinc, Maganesium and B6 should not be a large concern unless your dosage is VERY high. 100 mg or higer of Zinc can be TOXIC. Magnesium in excess of 1200 mg can cause slight discomfort, at 2000 mg+ it can stop your heart (My exwife was clinically dead once for 45 seconds due to an excess amount of Magnesium Oxide). 350 mg+ of B6 can cause pain and discomfort in neurological pathways. It never ceases to amaze me that people put stuff in thier bodies without knowing the pathways it takes and the lasting effects in can have. There are other ways of boosting testosterone by 10% (other than ZMA)... it's called frequent masturbation :) Which, shouldn't be a problem with this crowd. -------------- If your muscle wont allow you to do the last few reps, make your mind and heart do it. Your muscles will thank them later. |

i take a teaspoon once a day for 4 weeks then cycle off for 8 weeks (talking about the creatine). i did the optimum zma...recommended dosage of 3 capsules... you can find the facts on the label online, but it was way way lower than the stuff you listed. anyway, i don't consider myself an idiot and i do research the things i take beforehand... i didn't think there was anything that bad, and i try and drink a lot of water. thanks for the replies

esmuva, doctors know what doctors know. That can mean you wouldn't go to a gynacologist for stomach problems eh? It also means that the average doctor gets little training in nutrition and supplementation. You may want to see a sports medicine man rather than your run of the mill GP. My doc looked up and researched creatine when I asked him about it. He told me it was beneficial from regular muscles to even the heart. We discussed all my supplements from EFA's to ZMA to descicated liver and he told me that any irregularities that were bad would show up in bloodwork.
He is a sports medicine guy but he still had to look up most of what I had researched and decided to use. Maybe another opinion might make you feel better. Your levels on that test were just on the high side of normal. My body temperature is always 97.7. Low normal? Normal is a guideline. Get another opinion if you're worried. -------------- Sometimes I lie awake at night and wonder where have I gone wrong? Then I hear a voice say this is gonna take longer than one night. Charlie | |
