I don't use any sugar in my diet at all, aside from natural sugar that I have in my morning fruit.
Lately, (for a couple months) I have been using splenda to sweeten my tea, and put on oatmeal, etc........
I just researched it on line, and now i'm scared to death of the stuff!!!!
Should I just go back to raw honey? I hate using it, because the sugar increases my carb intake for the day, and it's a waste. I like to save my carbs for all good carbs.
Some things I just can't chug down with out some sweetness, but can't afford to add the sugar, honey, fruit, calorie wise say, in the evening.
Have you read about splenda? It sounds as bad (almost) as aspertame.
Ugh.

HI there-
A lot of people use it. I personally don't for the reasons you stated. I feel it is better to eat natural foods if you have the choice. My few cents.

I use splenda. To me, it's worth it to not have the calories and carbs of honey. I'm not sure what research you are talking about but If it's about causing cancer, it's an urban legend. Actually, in long term studies people who consumed aspertame on a regular basis were found no more likely to get cancer than people who did not use aspertame. Either one is supposed to be safe.

Actually there are no real long term studies, over 50 years or so, because splenda is a relatively new product. It is chlorinated sugar. I got this off splenda.com Unfortunately at one time cigarettes, asbestos and DDT were considered to be safe products as well.
How is SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener made?
SPLENDA® is the brand name for the ingredient sucralose. It is made through a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and converts it to a no calorie, non-carbohydrate sweetener. The process selectively replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms. Chlorine is present naturally in many of the foods and beverages that we eat and drink every day ranging from lettuce, mushrooms and table salt. In the case of sucralose, its addition converts sucrose to sucralose, which is essentially inert. The result is an exceptionally stable sweetener that tastes like sugar, but without sugar’s calories. After consumption, sucralose passes through the body without being broken down for energy, so it has no calories, and the body does not recognize it as a carbohydrate.

You might try Turbinado if you are wanting to stay natural. It has only 5 grams of carbs and 20 calories per teaspoon.

Is that the sugar in the raw that comes in the natural brown packaging? I forgot about that. I prefer everything in it's natural state too. That info on splenda is bad! Not as bad as aspartame, but .......... anything in it's natural state is better :)

Yes it is sugar in the raw. You can get it at the health food store.

i havnt seen the stevia or turbinado brands over here in the uk, anyone know of a low cal/carb sugar substitute thats available in the uk?
ive been using splenda for a couple of years now and although i like it in my oatbran, coffee and tea still taste a bit nasty with it even after all this time, i may just use normal sugar as i dont drink too much coffee and tea anyways but its always nice to have a healthier alternative
