A while back, when I was buying equipment for my gym, I happened across the barbells and casually tried curling various weights. I managed to go up to the 45's, almost able to do the 50's, and this got me thinking; back at my school, I couldn't even budge the 40's in a curl, and the only real difference I could spot between the two was that the school weights were really rusted. The guys at the fitness depot told me that the weights were accurately measured, but it seems odd to me that there could be a 10lb+ difference just from rusting...

I just saw this, and I want you to realize you just asked if rust on your weights makes a difference...

Yes, I do realize what I've asked, and though I understand it was a long shot, it was the only distinction I could make.
I actually hadn't done any intense exercise prior to both tests; the weights being sold at the fitness depot were apparently "accurately measured", but I dunno... |

Well, there is one thing that this reminds me of, and this is likely going a bit off topic, but I obviously don't care. We're talking about rust here. There is a community center around here with crappy/rusted equipment, and when I go to it, for some damned reason, I can't lift anything. At all. Everything in the little place is crowded, etc. etc. There is another community center in town that is very nice, has good equipment that is organized, and I don't feel like I'm breathing in rusted metal the whole time I'm there. It's not necessarily health club environment, they just take care of their stuff. I usually have good sessions there. It just so happens that this is also where I worked out when I made some great gains in high school. Needless to say, I rejoined that place this year, and have been making some progress again. It's probably all in my head. No, it is definitely in my head. But, I guess I can understand environment/cleanliness having effect on your overall workouts/psyche. do you account for the additional weight of the chalk for deadlifts?

I was wondering if excess sweat would cause the lift to be heaiver?

I'm starting to wonder if maybe a company would purposely make weights lighter than what they're marked as; people might favour equipment that makes them look and feel stronger.

I guess really my only problem with the whole thing is that I don't want to think that I'm capable of lifting more weight than I actually can.

Today I did a 250lb stone, but I had on extra tacky, so it was really 250.05lbs. PR!
